I feel like there isnt enough time! Is there?

I have set the final date for my Wedding for July 16, 2011. Currently I am living in Montana, but I am planning to have the Wedding in Washington State. I have been researching online and have found out that it can take up to 6 months for a wedding dress to come in after ordering it. I wanted to wait till I moved back to Washington State to have my mother and my friends there to help me pick out a dress. But I wont be able to move back till late Feburary. Which only leaves 5 months to order a dress. I dont know what to do! Any advice?

  • Don't wait. plan a trip out there to look for gowns. Or start looking for some where you are. If you find one at a chain store, call the store in Washington and ask that particular store to order. You gotta make moves sweetie!

  • Is there any way you could make a quick trip out there for a weekend and do a whirl wind shopping trip? If that's not possible, go shopping now and find the dress you want and have them ship it to your Mom in WA. That way you'll have the dress in time, and it won't be shipped to you in Montana after you've already moved.

  • Definitely go to a salon in Montana that carries the same designers as a salon by your home in Washington. Get measured in Montana, and then you can order the dress at the salon in Washington and start your fittings when you move home!

  • The last thing you want to be worrying about is your dress not coming in on time.  The bridal salons will be more than happy to add on rush charges, but there is no guarantee that the gown will arrive in time.

    Good luck!

  • Yea I definitely wouldn't recommend waiting- make a weekend trip of it and go shopping with the people you want with you. If you have the chance, take it, it's a once in a lifetime experience!

I ordered my wedding dress roughly 5 months before the wedding (I ordered the last week of July 2009, my wedding was January 1st 2010), did not pay a single rush fee and my dress came in 2 months later, so I had plenty of time.

I can't say that will be your experience, too, I'm just saying it is possible to get a dress shipped that quickly.

ETA: I did use David's Bridal ... I know there's a lot of people that say nothing but bad things about them, but I had a fabulous experience.

  • It depends on the dress and the designer.  I planned my whole wedding in 5 months, which included ordering a dress and it coming in.  Some designers and some dresses take the full 6 months, but my bridal shop was able to guarantee me that it would be in on time, as that designer only took about 4 months.  It actually came in around 3 months.

Ditto PPS about going to try some on to order at other stores.  Depending on where you go you may even be able to buy off the rack.  And if you are going to David's they always lie about their timelines.

  • I would say to look in MT for your dress.  If you don't find something-plan a trip out to WA state and do alot of wedding stuff during that week.  I am sure that if your bridal shoppe has the dress in MT they would ship it to you.

  • I planned my whole wedding in 6 months and was worried too.  I went to David's and they told me it would be 4 months to get the dress, so that was great.  No kidding, less than a month later they called to tell me it was in and I could schedule my first fitting.  Still, if you're concerned, or if David's doesn't suit you, definitely plan a fun weekend trip to go looking.  There's enough time; take a deep breath and enjoy the ride!

  • I'm getting married in 6 and half month and don't have a dress yet. I'm planning on going shopping in January when I go back home in NY (abroad right now). If I were you I would still go browsing to get at least feel of wedding gowns and get an idea of the style I like. If it wasn't pointless, considering where I am, I would have started looking already so I think you should start with the chains in Montana. Also, I have read tons of posts from knotties about dresses that came in weeks, sometimes months ahead of schedule. I think you'll be fine. Have fun!!
  • I was just in a weddina dn the bride actually got two dresses in about 4 months time. it's doable i say. she went to davids.
