Toasts from Bride and Groom

I don't know what the proper etiquette is on this. Do FI and I need to make a toast at the wedding and/or rehearsal dinner? Did anyone do this? Does it have to be a full speech or just a thank you? TIA!

Ours was sort of half and half.  We didn't plan a toast, but just wanted to thank everyone.  We each took turns speaking to our guests through the mic, and when it was my turn, I mentioned my parents' 30th anniversary (so that sort of turned into a toast for them) and also my brother just coming home from Iraq (which turned into a toast for him).I think if there is something or someone you feel deserves a special toast beyond what others have done for you, go for it.  Otherwise a simple, but gracious thank you is always well received.

I don't know what the proper etiquette is either and I've only been to 1 rehearsal dinner, but at that one the bride and groom just said a couple of words thanking us for being there. That's all we are planning on doing.
