I've known I wanted a sappahire since FI and I were talking about spending the rest of our lives together 3+ yrs ago. He has a thing about diamonds, which was oaky w/ me. So I went looking for rings and Tiffany's had a 3 stone ring w/ the middle stone as a sapphire, so from then I knew I wanted a sapphire. We have a friend who is a jewelry, he tried to talk to me into a blue diamond, but I couldn't get the deep blue color I wanted in a diamond. We picked the setting out together and what sold us on the setting was seeing the sapphire in it.
