NWR: Garden Help!

I started my "dream" garden last year after moving into DH's place - it was just a lawn and mud at that point!

So I have a few things in it from last season and plan to have it "grow" every season.  I held off on adding plants this summer because of my wedding and the fact that I was laid off so I wasn't sure about money/jobs/will we have the house still next year, etc.

But - things are looking up!  and here I am in August with a green thumb itch.  So my question:

Is it too late to add any perennials this year?  Will they have enough time to be established to survive the winter?  Garden centers are having their end-of-season sales and I really want to take advantage of them, but not if my new plants will die before next spring.
