Totally NWR...Online Class I'm Taking....

I'm taking an online class.  Due to being active duty military and being in the middle of an international move, I told my professor that some assigments might be a little late, and he said that was totally fine (this university has a lot of military students, and they have always been extrememly flexible with due dates and extensions).

I have three assignments that I turned in (on time) almost 5 weeks ago.  None of them have been graded.  I emailed the professor again to let him know, "Remember that move I told you about?  That's happening now, so my next few assignments might be a little late."  Since then, four more assignments have been due, which I have also turned in (slightly late).  No grades, and no response to my last email (almost 3 weeks ago).

So, prof isn't returning my email or grading my assignments.   I'd like to get feedback so that I can fix them and resubmit if necessary.

Should I email the university and ask about the professor?  The last time this happened it turned out the prof had died.  Seriously.

Any advice?

  • Contact the office that handles the online education (I work in a distance education office, so I understand what you're talking about). I'm also surprised your university doesn't have a policy about how long it should take an instructor to answer an e-mail. Our policy is that the instructor has one business day to answer student e-mails.
  • I didn't really request a reply, but some kind of acknowledgement that he received it would have been nice.  Or any indication that he is paying any attention to this course at all.

Normally I wouldn't be worried, but it's my capstone course.  If something happened and my papers never get graded, I won't graduate.

  • Can you get in touch with any other classmates?  Have they gotten stuff back?  Some professors don't take kindly to going behind their back, but if you've TRIED contacting him then who can blame you.
  • I had a teacher this semester that would always answer emails with at least "got it" if she received our email, whether or not we requested a reply. I thought that was amazing.

I'd definitely get in contact with the school. Three weeks is a ridiculous amount of time for him not to reply to your email. Either something is wrong or he's just a dope.

  • I'm not sure how your emails work but I remember that before our school switched to gmail accounts, we used to be able to add on a request to the email that would alert us when it was viewed (hope that makes sense).

Anyways, also being in a couple online courses, communication with my professors has always been extremely important. I've also made efforts to meet professors in person at their office when Im actually on campus so that they can put a face to the name/email. That's beside the point. . .

I would def. call at this point though. I'd start with his office and if you can't get through to him at that point, I'd call the course department or office of distance ed. If you're really worried, I'd just go ahead and call the distance ed department and explain the situation.

I can't believe you've had a professor pass away before and no one alerted you. That's beyond me and rather strange. You would think at least some open email to alert students would be sent out.

    Anyways, good luck!

Sorry, that was misleading.  We were notified after she passed away.  She was hospitalized for a few weeks before she passed.  I got the impression that they were waiting to see if she was going to pull through before notifying anyone. But yeah, it was a few weeks of no contact and no graded assignments before she passed and they notified us.

  • Ahh, ok, that makes a little more sense.

  • you said you didn't auctally ask for a reply back.. Well maybe email him asking him to email you back. yes i know its stupid to say that but some people lack common sense
  • So, I woke up this morning (I'm in the UK, a few hours ahead of you guys), and my two papers from 5 weeks ago are graded, and the prof responded to my mail.

Starting to wonder if my prof hangs out on The Knot.  Prof Keely, are you here???
