Flu Symptom Remedies- Please Share

So, I'm riding the couch today while I decorate it with tissues and rock some serious bed-head. My sinuses are locked up tighter than Fort Knox, my head is pounding out some gnarly drum music, and if my nose keeps running this way, I'm going to start pulling tourism away from Niagra Falls.

So before I head out to Walmart to scare the poor employees there while I zombie-shamble through the pharmacy section, anybody got any suggestions for symptom treatment? I mean, I feel honored and all to contribute to humanity's arms race against viruses. But at day three, I'm getting desperate for some relief.

Thanks in advance for anything you can share. Even if it's: "Hit your head until you pass out". Been considered!

  • I've never tried it, but I've heard wonderful things about the netty pot!

  • I would recommend some theraflu, daytime and nighttime. That stuff works wonders. Also, some saltines, ginger ale and orange juice! When I had the flu, I went thru a whole box of fruit popsicles, like the dole ones. Hope you get better soon!

  • When I got sick earlier this year, my doctor recommended Coricidin (I do not have high blood pressue). The high schooler in me kind of giggled because I remember my idiot friends taking too much of it for fun and calling it "Triple C". They have different kinds for different symptoms and it helped.

As HORRIBLE as it is (I honestly do not know how cocaine users do it), those saline nasal sprays work really well. But I only do that as a last resort and before bed because I cannot sleep with a stuffy nose.

I hope you feel better. :(
  • Thanks everyone, I picked up some of the items that you recommended, we'll see how it goes. I did scare a Walmart worker as predicted too.

She had to ask for my ID because of the cold medicine, and when I held it out, I said "You don't want to touch it, I promise you" when she tried to reach for it. She gave me the cuuuuuuuuutest big deer eyes. Omg I wanted to smush her cheeks. I explained why, but was sad that the explanation made the bambie eyes go away.

I think I have too much fun interacting with strangers. Also, that I need to sleep. Thanks again all, off to bed I go.

[QUOTE]Rub a layer of Vicks (or any sort of methalotum) on your feet, top to bottom and between the toes, then put on a pair of thick socks. Also rub some behind your ears. I know, I know, it sounds disgusting and weird, but I swear it works. Also, grab a big pack of cheap toothbrushes so you can switch out your toothbrush after every use for the next few days. You'd be amazed how well this works at cutting down time of illness.

  • i recommend tea. I like herbal ones and chamomile. The warmth can make you feel better and less congested, in my opinion, and it helps to get some extra fluids in. I am a huge supporter of fluids when sick!

As for the Vicks on the feet. . . . . . . my dad does that for my niece and nephew when they are under the weather, and it seems to work wonders. I'm not sure where he learned it from.
  • Hope you feel better soon! When I was sick with the flu I stocked up on green tea, chicken broth, saltines and gingerale. As far as meds go ( I work in a pharmacy) for dry cough that will not go away nothing beats Delsym cough suspension, for a wet mucus cough it is Robitussin DM... Vicks is a good idea as mentioned by a few on here as well... For the sinuses sudafed... and if it is coupled with a headache just plain headache meds will help. These are a few things that coworkers have shared with me and have been tried and true thus far. I hope that you feel better and that this nasty bug goes away and stays away
  • Thanks again for the suggestions everyone, I really appreciate it.

I'm on day 4 of the serious symptoms, and I think things are getting better. The worst right now is the shortness of breath when I try to walk more than 20 feet, and the plugged ears (happens to me for every cold and flu I get). At least I got rid of the night sweats, disorientation, niagra falls, light sensitivity, etc.

The worst part of all of this is that I think I got this while I was travelling to my Grandmother's funeral. Boise has been extremely fortunate this year for flu, and isolated from the strain going around. I even got my vaccination this year, yet alas I got another strain. I am praying that I'm not the typhoid Mary that introduces the area to a late flu.
