Making my dress - any suggestions?

Not sure if I should post this here or under DIY, but I am making my own dress. After looking around extensively I realized that dresses dont come in my shape and size. I am 4'11" with a thick hourglass figure. (large chest and booty with a smaller waist)

I have already decided on my style and all that, I was just wondering if anyone else here is making there own and what problems you ran into? Where did you start?

My dress is going to be made in 3 pieces. A bodice/corset, and then the skirt is two teired (a cocktail skirt for the reception and then a long skirt/underskirt w/train for the ceremony.)

PS I have tons of sewing/seamstress skills and my future in-laws are helping some.

Re: Making my dress - any suggestions?

  • I'm not making my dress, but my mom is making all the bridesmaid & flower girl dresses.
Just be patient with it. That's the best advice I can give. Don't get in too much of a hurry or it won't look good. Good luck!
  • I'm making my dress, with the help of a dressmaker friend. I think the big tips are to leave yourself more time than you think you need, be patient, and don't be afraid to ask/pay for help if you really need it.
