DB Apple red separates top with khaki pants... crazy idea for bm's?

We are thinking of a possibly crazy idea... we are having a traditional wedding at 9:30am and a bbq reception at 11. My FH was thinking of wearing a tan/khaki linen suit, the bm were going to wear the Apple red dresses and the gm, well we dont know, maybe khaki's and a tie... NOW, we are thinking of this idea.. What if the bm wore one of the Apple separates tops with a pair of dressier khakis. The gm could also wear khaki's with a shirt and tie (maybe red?) and FH could stick with his planned suit. Would that look totally strange?
I think we are going to go tonight so I can try on this idea and see if it looks rediculous or not. What do you think?

7-21 - Ok, so after all the comments below, we are gettning regular bm dresses from DB in Apple.

Re: DB Apple red separates top with khaki pants... crazy idea for bm's?

  • Don't take offense at this, but I think that sounds horrible. Not even a dressy pair of khakis is going to pair well with a satin formalwear separate top. But go try it out if you want, it's your wedding after all.

If you want to keep things casual, maybe a better option would be sundresses? There are a lot of great ones in stores right now.
  • I have to agree with the PP. It doesn't make sense to me at all! I'm not trying to sound snarky, or snooty. But try other options...try the idea you had when you get to DB.

  • A satin top would look really weird, but a chiffon or silk top might look nice.  David's doesn't have much in the way of fabric options, but some of the other designers have separates in different fabrics.

Or you could give the girls a fabric swatch and ask them to find their own solid-colored top as close to that color as possible, and trust them to make sure their choice would look good with the khakis.

  • I agree with PP. I don't think it'll look good together.

The girls could still be in dresses and look casual. Have you thought about looking at dresses in a cotton fabric or some that aren't bridal? J.Crew has great dresses as does just about every store right now from Target to Nordstrom.

  • um, that makes me think of Target employees.
  • One of the main problems I'm having with the idea is that separates tend to end at the natural waist, the narrowest part of the body. Pants tend to sit lower on the hip, so unless you make sure your girls have high-waisted pants, there's likely to be bare skin there.

They are also much more fitted than any pants would be.

  • I will ahve to agree with everyone above. Plus, I think you might look back on your photos and request having your BM's wear khaki's. If you are looking for something light and airy, I saw this DB's dress and it comes in the Apple color you are wanting. It is made out of a cotton sateen and would be very light and airy an would look good with basic sandals even. The best part they could wear this dress to church again or put a cardigan over it for date night. Which they would likely not be able to do with just the top.

  • please buy sundresses instead.  khakis are not a good idea - at all.  esp if the groomsmen are in khakis and ties --- your BM"s will look odd and totally underdressed compared to everyone else in the wedding party.

also, have you run this idea by your BM's?  i'm going to guess they wouldn't be thrilled with the idea.
  • it is a crazy idea and it will look strange.  don't do this.
  • what about kacki skirts, and a pretty red blouse or sweater  and killer red heels? the bridesmaids tops are a too dressy for kackies

    for example TOp

    heels

that way the girls look like girls and it's still a more casual look
  • What about khaki pencil skirts? I have a really lovely khaki pencil skirt that's very easy to dress up with the right top...also, it would sit high enough on the waist that the girls wouldn't have skin showing, as opalsky pointed out.

  • I am voting for ridiculous... A formal top is not going to look good with a pair of khaki pants.
  • I would do white or gray dress pants instead.  If they're all wearing pants, maybe a blouse or other dress shirt instead of separates.
  • ROTFL. I had a feeling this is the reaction I would get. ;-(

We have to use DB. My dress and fg dress and both sash have already been purchased.

To the one who said they'd look like Target employees- too funny. I hadn't thought of that.

thanks for the honest replies. I guess we'll go back to them buying the apple bm dresses.
  • Im sorry but I think you will seriously regret this decision.

Why does this mean you HAVE to use DB?  The colors don't have to be 100% the same if that is your reasoning.  Your BM could easily find dresses or whatever you chose to use in a very close color at most stores, or even other bridal shops.
  • Ditto ksmith.  It'll be fine if you can get close enough, no one will notice whether or not they match exactly.

    Ooh...yeah. This.

But no. I REALLY dont think that would look very good. I suggest what PP's said - sundresses. Your BM's will thank you.
