David's Bridal Alterations

Hi ladies, I know there are David's Bridal all over the country which is why I am posting here.  I went in a couple of weeks ago for my alterations appointment.  Saying my dress was big was an understatement.  It was big on the waist and hips when I bought it but they assured me a size 8 was the best because I do have some bigger ribs.  :)   Anyway, instead of me paying for alterations on this dress which would have been ridiculous, they rushed a new size and scheduled a new appt for me a week and a half later!  No charge to me!  Talk about a shock but a pleasant one.  After all, I also lost 10 pounds and when you are 5'2" that is a big difference!  So this was clearly my doing since I had lost weight.

Anyway, went to my new appt and tried on my size 4.  It fit sooo much better in the chest and ribs but still had to be taken in on the waist and hips.  Add the bustle and a couple of other things..  $125 for all alterations.  (I ordered a petite so I wouldn't have to pay for the hem.)

My moral of the story is I was so worried about DB and alterations and everything else I had heard.  They bent over backwards for me and even got me a size that fit my body better to me.  I still can't believe the customer service I had from them.  Like I said, I know there are a lot of negative opinions on them but I am so grateful for what they did for me.  I couldn't be happier with the final outcome!!  :)

  • I'm glad your experience with DB was a pleasant one. I've had a horrible experience with them and I've heard of others also who had bad one. But isn't $125 for alterations a little much? That was my main complaint about DB's alterations and beside their lack of communication. I had a bridesmaids dress from there and I think I paid around $130 just for alterations.

  • Well that's good to hear! I'm trying to figure out if I'll use them for my alterations or not.. I've herad the horror stories and am scared, but then again, it's easiest for me to just have them do it. I don't know!

  • Actually, alterations can be really expensive.  On my month board, girls are paying $200-400 for alterations.  My dress is not simple either.  Just wanted to share my experience because I do know DB has a certain reputation and for me, it was nice that they wanted to get me a dress that actually fit me instead of making me pay a ridiculous amount of alterations for the one I had.  I'm by no means saying all DB are great, but there are some people and stores out there who are willing to go the extra mile sometimes.

  • No, I understand completely! I think it's awesome that they do have some really nice people in this world that understand what a bride goes through and the different level of emotions and they were able to help you with no questions asked. My only complaint about ALL bridal shops are they charge outrageous amounts of money for alterations. You bought a dress with them the least they can do is offer your alterations for cheaper or free. End vent! Luckily, the place where I got my dress it was free of charge.

  • I'm glad you had a good experience!

I really feel like it just varies so much from store to store. While they're a national chain, the service you receive is so dependent on the people working in each place. I didn't get my wedding gown there but did order my BM dresses through them. We had horrible service when we went in and our appointment was on a weeknight when hardly any other customers were in the store, so they weren't busy. In my city, we're lucky in that there are lots of independent seamstresses who do amazing work for way cheaper, but I do agree that on the whole, bridal alterations are expensive.

Regardless, glad it all worked out for you. That was nice of them to order a new size; most stores wouldn't have done that.

  • it's nice to hear good things about them after seeing all the negative ones. i'm glad it worked out for you so good.
  • I loved my DB experience too! And I got my alterations done there as well and while they were expensive, I did have a lot of work done on my gown (hem, corset back, cups sewn in, on a dress with four layers, lace, beadwork, and appliques, plus a veil bustle...) I had my second fitting last week and I LOVED the work that they had done! I know I can't speak for any other bride but from the actual shopping experience (I found my dress on the first day of shopping) to my alterations experience, I had a great time at my David's Bridal.

  • Random4180- I see that you're in the Outer Boroughs too. Did you go to the store in Queens? I have an appointment for alterations there next week, and have no idea what it's going to cost.

I bought my dress at a DB store in Las Vegas (my mom and sister live there), and had wonderful service. I think it definitely depends on the consultant/store!
  • I went to the one in LIC, yep! Great store- I will warn you, it's in a strip mall but don't let the outer appearance bother you, lol. The staff has always been super great to me (I constantly showed up early for my appointments because I was never driving myself and I was never made to feel like I was inconveniencing anyone.) One good thing about the strip mall- lots of parking!

What are you looking to have done? I had it taken up quite a bit because it was about six inches too long ($120,) and I had a corset back put in ($115 for the corset itself and $40 for two yards of ribbon for lacing,) the bodice needed some re-structuring ($35,) I had cups sewn in ($20,) and had my cathderal veil bustled ($15.) I had three fittings total and just brought my dress home on Wed after having my first appointment in early June. My dress is a bit complicated, with beading on the bodice and a skirt with four layers and two tiers and appliques- but they only charge for the actual work done, not how long it takes. And the work was done very well so I'm definitely a satisfied DB customer here!
