What kind of ring do I have?

I know absolutely nothing about engagment rings or diamonds, and I'm generally uninterested in it, but now that I have one (surprise surprise!) I would like to know a little more about it. I don't want to ask my fiance because I know for a fact he'll tell me what it costs, and I don't want to know that, and he knows as much about jewelry as I do.
I have no idea about carats, cuts, settings and I was hoping someone would be able to at least give me a good educated guess about the features of my ring.

I'm going to try to add a picture, but if it doesn't work, here's a url: http://tinyurl.com/ctyrwft

Re: What kind of ring do I have?

  • Well. . . it's a round cut in what appears to be a bezel setting. Is there a smaller row of diamonds between the main stone and the bezel? If so, that part is called a halo. If not, from what I can tell, it's a Solitare Bezel setting. Hope that helps!
  • Well I don't know anything about jewels either but I just wanna say Congratulations and it looks fabulous on your finger!
  • A pretty one.

You should really have paperwork on your ring from where he bought it and it should give you a description. In fact if you havent you should insure your ring ASAP through your house insurance, god forbid something should happen to it.

And ask your fiance to maybe just read you the description, without the price.

Money is a weird topic, but you're gonna have to get used to it being engaged. I second the suggestion to make sure you get it insured if your fiance didn't already. But congrats! It's beautiful ;)

Yes, you should definitely have open communication about money when engaged/married, but this is different. I still don't know what H paid for my e-ring and don't care to know. He bought it himself when we had separate finances and paid for it all on his own. It's pretty common (at least in my circle) for the guy to not broadcoast to his FI how much he spent on her ring. To me, that's like having someone give you a gift and then saying, "Oh yeah, it cost me $500 by the way."

OP, I do agree that you absolutely should get it insured. To do that, you'll need to get it appraised if your FI doesn't already have an appraisal for it. We just added the insurance for all our wedding rings onto our home insurance. If you don't want to know the cost, have your FI deal with giving the insurance company the appraisal for it.

  • Agree with all the PP's.  I also did not want to know what FI spent, but he told me allllll about what kind of diamond and cut, etc.  We added it to the homeowners, but I know the appraisal is higher than what he spent.
  • To find out all the details about your ring, get it appraised.  Contact a good local jewelry store for recommendations.  Some of the stores have a reputable appraiser visit regularly.  You have to schedule an appointment.

Once you have the appraisal, you use the appraisal to get your engagement ring insured.  If you have homeowners' insurance, you add a rider to your homeowners insurace.

Posted by punkyalicia[/QUOTE] THIS!!! And he probably did get paperwork IF he bought it from a jewelry store...my ring is heirloom (his grandmothers) so we had it appraised at a jewelry store and have it insured for more than what it's worth.
