The Dress is Discontinued - Need Advice!

I recieved a call from my bridal shop that the Maggie Sottero dress I fell in love with is discontinued!

I found the dress 3 weeks ago - and they were waiting until this weekend to order it since they were having a trunk show and could offer 20% off.

Since I was the 1st of a few girls who wanted to order it, they have offered me the sample...problem is I was ordering a size 10 and the sample is a size 8.  The sample is a corset style back and it fit okay when I tried it on, the bodice was just a little bit tight, but not sure if that was because it was really tightly laced up...

I did want to loose some weight too before the wedding.  I need advice, would you buy a sample dress that was just a tiny bit too small and try to loose the weight?  A bit more background...I am pretty active, have done triathlons and half-marathons and know how to loose 10 lbs pretty quick.  The wedding is May 1 so it's not like I have any extra time to order another dress and have it come in time, so I'd have to find another sample that I liked.

  • Forgot to add - they are offering it at half off the discounted price - so its originally a $1700 dollar dress that they have offered to me for under $700.

  • What style is it? Post it here and maybe someone can find it for you. I wore a Maggie to my wedding and am debating whether to sell it (Brittanya Lynette).

You may be able to find it on preownedweddingdresses.com, SavetheDress.com, eBay, Craigslist or the Nest's Trash to Treasure board.

Ditto this. Those are all good sites to look around on. What about trying to see if any other bridal shops in the vicinity of say, 100 miles, or so have it in your size?
  • Definitely don't buy small thinking you will lose the weight! That's too much pressure on yourself just for a dress, no matter how pretty the dress. Look online. See if you can find it used in your size.
  • If it's just a tiny bit small, could you make it work with the right undergarments if you can't find it in a bigger size?
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • try the following websites for dresses for sale (some never even worn!):

    www.preownedweddingdresses.com

    www.oncewed.com

    www.weddingbee.com

All of these places have  dresses for cheap cheap cheap!  They seem to me to be the most reputable site for sample or once worn dresses.

Also,  my advise would be to always buy at least your size and not smaller.  Some fabrics and designs of dresses don't have much material to be 'let out' and especially if there's beading you're looking at not only a ton of money but possibly even a variation in design.

The only way I would get the sample dress is if the bridal salon is confident that that particular style can be let out enough to fit you.  It's generally easier to take a dress in than let it out, but perhaps this style has enough room in the seams, and the style would be ok, since it sounds like it's not too tight to begin with.

However, tha'ts a really, really big 'if'.  And I would also need to trust the salon's judgement on that.  I suggest checking the sites for pre-owned dresses that others mentioned.

Edit: I wanted to re-iterate PPs point, don't buy the dress assuming that you will lose weight.
