Need suggestions for dressing soon-to-be SD

FI and I will be taking his daughter to buy a dress for the wedding in a couple of weeks. She is 12, probably an even five foot, and developed very quickly over the last year. I have two boys, and I have no clue how to dress a young lady. It is really important to me to be fair to her, I want her to love her dress! However, I have noticed that she is really proud of her chest and often dresses in low cut scoop or v-necks. I do see her as a young lady, and not a little girl. I DO need help (begging for help!) in some basic style ideas that will be both age appropriate and allow the coverage she should have (she is easily a full C cup). Are there some styles that you can suggest to guide me - while I try to guide her?

  • What is her role in the wedding? Is she just a guest? Jr. Bridesmaid?

  • She will be greeting our guests as they arrive with my son. She will direct them to the guest book. She can be as formal as she likes, or a more 'church' style dress (for lack of a better word!) would also be fine!

  • Well I think it really depends on how formal she wants to go. I would go to a deparment store (Kohls or Macys) and go to the Jr. Dresses section. It sounds like you may even be able to go up to women's section if need be.

If she wants to be a little more casual I would say go with a pretty wrap dress. Something like this:

I don't have any kids but personally I would just stay away from anything strapless, too low cut or too short/tight. Knee length or just above the knee if she doesn't want something floor length.

I'm not sure what your relationship with her mother is like, but she might be able to offer some input as well.

  • Thank you, SJM :) I like the wrap dress idea, if she is more comfortable with a casual dress. Her mother doesn't seem concerned about her clothing choices showing cleavage. FI tries to cover her up completely. I would like to be a fair middle ground!

  •  it isn't appropriate for the event.

Oh, Stage - thank you. I really like that phrasing!

NP! I love them for any event. You can always dress it up with a nice pair of shoes as well.
