first fitting did not go well

I just went to my first fitting and the lady quoted me 600 dollars for my 900 dollar dress. I actually had to leave I was so sad. No beading nothing, just lost weight and now the dress is two sizes too big. I understand that cost is relative but is this normal? I mean, I would do it but I went in thinking that my alterations would be like 200...thoughts? Similar stories?

  • Yeah, that's a lot, even for the big city.

Is there anything else complicated about your dress? Complicated ruching or pleats? If it needs hemmed, does it have a lot of detail around the hem? That can be really pricey.

I'd ask on your local board (links are in the top left) for advice from brides in your area. Good luck!
  • yea thats a good idea...no, it is really simple, just two sizes too big! It does need to come up a few inches...I will try local boards thanks =)

  • Wow, that's crazy.  Mine alterations were $128, which including taking in the top, twice, sewing up cups, and adding a traditional bustle.  Good luck!
  • 2 sizes is a serious amount of altering though.  When I bought my bridesmaid dress for a wedding this summer, the consultant said to be very careful because having to alter it more than 1 size up or down could be near to impossible...

Frankly I'd start scarfing the donuts instead of shelling out $600 lol.
  • katieisawesome...you are from Boston so I am sure its pricey up there too...My whole family is saying "just gain weight" but its not that easy!!! LOL. Yea, 2 sizes is alot. My girlfriend had 4 sizes, YES 4 sizes taken in and her dress came in too short. Sooo, she had to add fabric to the bottom. Alterations = OVER $1000. Can you imagine?!
