What did you pay for your dress?

What is the average a person will spend on her bridal dress? I saw this gorgeous dress in a magazine and called the store, it's about $1,800. I'm going to make an appointment to try it on next week, but I'm not sure if that's a ridiculous price. How much is the norm for a bride to spend on her gown?

Re: What did you pay for your dress?

  • It all depends. Some people will get their dream gown from David's Bridal for $99 or some will get their dream Vera Wang for $5,000 and up. Everyone's budget is different. If you have the money for that gown and you absolutely love it then it's the right price for you.

  • This totally depends on your budget, what you can afford, and are what you are willing to pay for a dress. My budget was $1500, but I ended up buying a dress for $300.
  • about $2,000 with alterations
  • Can you get a price quote from Netbride or one of the reputable dress shops online before you go. You may be able to talk them down in price. Probably not to the online price, but close to it probably! GL!! I hope you like it!

  • Dress: $350  alterations: $168I had a small budget of $600 since I wanted to get great flowers and photography I think the "average" girl will spend "800-1500"

  • My budget for the dress was $800 max. I was only going to have to put up $400 of that $800 if I found one for that price because my future mother-in-law and my mom were putting up $200 a piece towards it. Well I found the one, a $1200 dress and got it for $515 including the two slips needed (it's an "as-is" dress). No alterations are needed, just have to remove a couple tiny stains and cut like two little threads. I do need to figure out the bustle...so that price may end up going up in total in the end.Just go for what you can afford, try on anything up to that amount, you may be surprised and find the dress for very cheap just as one PP did!
  • I don't think there is an average. If there is...it needs to coincide with the budget of a wedding. I don't think it makes sense to buy a $5,000 gown when you are going to the justice of the peace...but to each their own right? When you see the dress you will know! Good luck shopping! • $1000 is my limit, I just can't see paying much more for ANYTHING that just gets worn once or twice. But, to each her own :)
  • $840 for the dress and shoes, pre-alteration.  My max was 1k.  I need to buy a new strapless bra and Mom and I are making the fingertip veil, and I'm wearing my sister's tiara and earrings I got as a gift recently.
  • $1000 dollars

  • Haven't bought a gown, yet, but the dress I am in love with right now is $1800. I am hesitant to just order it because I'd prefer it to be lower!  I am still looking around, hoping to find something I like even more for less, but like everyone else said, it all depends on your budget.  If I have LOTS of money, I would be willing to spend a lot more, but with my budget, it would be nice to find something around $1000.  But if I don't, I will most likely the $1800 dress!  (What a great plan B lol)The price of the gown often depends on the designer of the gown, and also the material of the fabric.  It really all depends on what you want and/or are willing to spend.

  • $800 CAD including alterations (the dress itself was $550 CAD, plus taxes and alterations). I shopped in stores that had dresses ranging from about $300 to $2,000 CAD.If you don't have the money for it, don't bother trying it on. I only tried on one dress over my budget. Thank goodness it wasn't "the one", but it was pretty close... and from that moment on, I decided not to even look at anything over budget.

  • Price really comes down to what you are comfortable spending. I negotiated the price for my dress... although it was already under my budget. You have to spend what you can comfortably spend and not care if it sits in you closet for the next 20-30 yrs after your wedding. I know alot of girls sell their dresses after their weddings, to recoup costs, however I cant imagine EVER selling my wedding dress.
  • I'm getting mine made by a seamstress here in Albuquerque for $260 (material included). Her work is amazing! Try your local people first to see if they could replicate the $1800 dress for a lot less.
  • I paid about 1275 for the dress, not including alterations (extra $225). I wanted to pay less than 1000, but oh well!
  • 1,200 including tax.  no alteration costs.
  • Mine retails for $6,000 and I bought it used on preownedweddingdresses.com for $3000

  • My dress originally was priced at $5,500 but I got it for $3,000. I waited a year and the price went down.
  • My dress is about $650, not counting alterations. It fits perfectly but I'm considering adding white satin straps to it, so that will be an additional cost down the road if I choose to go that way.Good luck with your dress! :)

  • I think that as long as you tell the consultant up front what you're willing to pay - then you should be able to stay within your budget and find the perfect dress.  My mom was going to pay $1000 and I was so excited - I said I'd pay anything over that...and I still came out with a. Essence of Australia dress at $1700 but bought it for $1300.  Not sure if that was a great deal - but at least it wasn't a $2000 dress....

I fell in love with a Pronovias dress (Ideal) but couldn't afford the $1350+ $150 hollow to hem cost + alterations. After shopping around, I was able to order the same dress from a different store for $1000!  Don't be afraid to shop around and ask the store owners to work with you on the price. The store I went to gave me such a great deal because I was willing to pay upfront the same day I came in.
  • I got mine on sale for 750.00...but it was orginally 1,200. And that was a painful amount to fork over. It all depends on the norm for the brides typical spending and the overall wedding budget.
