London or Chicago

I am currently living in London, but will be moving to Chicago in February, and my wedding is in June (which gives me four months once I get to Chicago). I won't be coming back to London before the wedding. I don't know what to do becauses if I buy the dress here then I won't have final fittings, etc before the wedding and I have to pay in £s! I could wait until I get home so that I could have final fittings etc before the wedding and I could go a bit more extravagant because it will cost me about half as much. If I wait until I get to Chicago am I cutting it too close? Has anyone had a similar situation?

Re: London or Chicago

  • Yes...unless you buy off the rack 4 months is way too close. The general rule is that it takes dresses 4-6 months to come in and then they want 6-8 wks for alterations. Sometimes you can pay extra to rush it...but not always. Are there any dresses that you can try on in London but that they carry in Chicago? You could ttry it on over there but purchase it from a salon in the states and have it shipped to Chicago as well.

  • I would buy the dress in London and then have it fitted in Chicago- you don't have to do the fittings at the store where you bought your dress. Or, ditto pp and could you try on dresses in London, find out your size and then order the dress from a salon in Chicago. If you have your size, I am sure most places would accept an order over the phone. I lived in Chicago for a summer and will move back there in a few months and I know this salon has a very good reputations and carries designer gowns: Ultimate Bride: www.ultimatebride.com I would see if any of the lines there are carried in London for you to try on. I would not wait- most gowns take 6-9 months to come in, I got an Amy Michelson and was told 6 months is quickest to get it in- and you still need to allow for time for fittings, etc. Good luck!!
