dress question for the nonreligious...

did anyone else not wear white? I'm considering my options, and may go as far off as hunter green. I know several brides that wore other colors, and looked stunning. did anyone else radically diverge from the white bride look? How did it go?

Re: dress question for the nonreligious...

  • If you love the dress then go for it! It should be about you being uniquely you. I've seen beautiful gold, pink and even a red dress in stores.
  • I've never been to a wedding where the bride didn't wear white but I wouldn't mind it.  As long as it's a pretty dress then I'd think she looked beautiful no matter the color.  This isn't really hunter green but it's a greenish gray, http://cgi.ebay.com/Christina-Wu-Bridal-gown-5468-Ivory-size-8-Lace-NWT_W0QQitemZ250466881204QQcmdZViewItemQQptZWedding_Dresses?hash=item3a50fd4eb4&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262I saw that a few min before I clicked this post and LOVED it.
  • White bridal gowns are not a religious custom ... they became popular beacuse Queen Victoria wore one to her wedding and then everyone wanted to copy her. It was like everyone running out to get Jennifer Aniston's "Rachel" haircut in the 1990s. Non-wealthy brides had to wear a dress that they could easily re-wear in the future, because it was a waste to wear a one-time-use dress. If you've ever read the Little House on the Prairie books, Laura Ingalls Wilder married in a black dress because that was the newest dress in her wardrobe at the time. Somewhere over the years, somebody made up the "purity" and "religious" meanings and people believed it. So wear whatever color or style you want. I ordered a white dress with silver details, but I actually had my eye on this green one for a while: http://www.bluefly.com/Amsale-olive-beaded-satin-empire-waist-gown/cat60019/214594500/detail.flyHere's another one that I considered: http://www.jlmcouture.com/Jim-Hjelm-Occasions/Bridesmaid/Additional/Style-5680

  • MBC is right about the religious thing, white was never meant to mean purity or anything, it just turned into that.  Red on the other hand does symbolize many things in chinese weddings.  Most of their brides wear red.
  • I'm wearing a bronze, below-the-knee dress, and I predict the world will not come to an end :o)  I'm not exactly a teeny tiny stick, and just couldn't picture myself feeling good in a big white dress.  Plus I wanted to have the option to be able to wear it again, considering it's the most gorgeous and expensive dress I'm ever likely to own.I say go with whatever will make you feel happiest and look best on the day :o)
  • I am wearing white but my last trip to the bridal shop, the store owner made a comment that she has seen more and more brides coming into to the store looking for colored gowns.  She said it has become more popular.  I say if it's what you want to wear on your wedding, go for it!!

  • I agree with meriamjuicy... I went with ivory/white but have some colorful undies and shoes to satisfy my urge to be unique.
  • Ooo! I am about to order a red dress. i have NOT spoken to FI about it, but this is his second wedding, and i think he will be flabbergasted, in an amazingly good way. now...to tell his mom about it this weekend! i'm trying to keep it a surprise for most people. At the end of the day, it's about your day, and how you feel when you make the biggest commitment of your life. that's what i believe, anway. GOOD LUCK! let me know what you decide! and i'm curious to hear what other colored dress brides have to say :)
