Question: When should you start doing fittings?

I found my dress this summer but my wedding isn't until December of 2010. My dress will probably need a great deal of alteration because I bought the sample size in the store (on a great sale) but it was very large on me. The sales assistant said that altering it would be no problem but I wanted to know when I should start going in for my first fittings. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the input! I love my dress and have since stopped all dress looking because I figure I have much more to plan and worry about and thank god the dress is found. I'm just worried that because it will have to be taken in so much that I might want to go a bit earlier... hmm. But thanks again for the advice.

I started my fittings a month before my wedding. Your weight could fluctuate a lot in the next year and a half, so I would wait if I were you.
