Alteration $$ for bridal gown

Hi! So i'm wondering what others brides are paying for their alterations costs? I'm going on my 4th/final fitting and am already at $250!! I want to die when I think about it.  I plan on having a conversation with them when I go back, it really started to bother me when I was driving home from my last visit.  I'm a pretty average size 6 build, not like they have to take my dress in a few sizes. So wanting to know if others have to pay a lot as well...may put my mind at ease!  Thanks brides!  ps. I live in northeast PA...not having some NYC shop do them

Re: Alteration $$ for bridal gown

  • most places i visited either had an alteration cap (somewhere in the 2-300 range, plus bustle) or they were included (like mine).  i am in ny.
  • Mine was about $300 but I had a lot done. 8 point bustle, hem taken up, cups sewn in, top taken in (through many layers of boning), and a veil made for me.

  • I also live in PA and I was quoted for $225 to shorten the hem, take it in 2 sizes, hem the bodice, steam the dress, and add a bustle. I have heard that $200-$300 is pretty typical for wedding dress alterations. When I was considering David's Bridal, they quoted me for about $300.
  • I paid $155 total for taking in the top and adding 2 bustles. The hemming was included with the purchase of my dress. I'm in CT.

  • Mine was about 250 for alterations, the bustle, and pressing. It seems strange to me that they would charge you for each fitting. IMO, they should charge you a flat fee the first time, and it's up to them to get it right. If it doesn't fit right after the first fitting, that's their problem, not yours.
  • I'm in WI and using a private seamstress that works out of her house. I'm paying $75 for a 7pt. underbustle and for the waist to be taken in. That price includes pressing and storage. I didn't need a hem at all.

  • I'm is $75 were I bought the dress. It just needed taking in around the chest area and let out around my hips. No hemming done. Mine also included cleaning/pressed. I finally get to pick it up today...after I have been five times!! So excited!! I'm in SC.
  • i am paying $460! i feel stupid. the dress had to be taken in everywhere, cups put in top, bustle done (i do not know points or whatever) boning removed, changed. it had to be taken up from chest to thigh, could that be why it was more expensive? i also took it to the best place i could find. too late now i guess.
  • Mine's a $500 flat fee.
  • Btw, there's a northeast PA board now so you can post this on there and compare your price other brides in the area.

  • 4 gown fittings??? You are being jerked around! It should not take the seamstress more than 2 fittings to get things right. If it does, then she either doesn't know what she is doing, or she is trying to get more $ out of you.
  • I'm in NYC and paid $460 for mine - it got taken in 2 sizes with lots of boning and an asymetrical bias, hemmed, bustled with a 4 point french, neckline changed to a sweetheart, cups sewn in, and I had it steamed.  I didn't have any solid recommendations for someone cheaper so I took it to an independent bridal salon.  I definitely didn't want to pay that much, but I also didn't want to take it somewhere with no reputation.
