Has anyone dyed shoes?

I'm looking for dark red heels (open toed) to wear for my wedding and can't find anything I like in my size ANYWHERE. I've heard that dying shoes is risky because if it rains or your feet sweat, the dye can run. Does anyone have any experience?

Re: Has anyone dyed shoes?

  • The dye won't run if you treat the shoes with a waterproof spray which you can buy for a couple bucks at any shoe store (Walmart probably has it too).  I didn't have any problems with my dyeables, and I didn't even waterproof them.

  • I dyed my shoes myself. (fuchsia pink) it was super easy, and I didn't get any stains when I wore them around the house for a couple of hours. I will however spray them a couple of days before the wedding to make them waterproof
  • If you dye your own, don't immerse them- use a swab or better yet a preval to apply the color. There's a brand available online called Evangeline Slipper Dye that is shoe-specific and will work better than Rit.
  • I dyed mine.  I am going to spray the waterproof stuff on them too.  I did a little test strip and it worked out well when I sprayed it with water.  And then, more than likely if it does happen, I will just take the shoes off because my feet will be hurting anyways. :) Best of luck!!
