How soon is too soon?

I'm planning on getting married in 2011 but I've already seen a dress I am absolutely in love with. Its perfect in every way and I'mwondering if its too soon to put down a deposit on it? My biggest fear is that if I wait what if its not available by then...help!?

Re: How soon is too soon?

  • Wait. You will most likely change your mind 10 times. Just keep an eye on it and if it's in danger of discontinuing, buy it.

  • Sure, go ahead. But in 5 months you'll be back on here posting another "I found another dress that I love, now what?". You should wait until you're about 10 months out before ordering your dress.

  • Wait until 9-12 months out. I bought a dress at a sample sale 18 months out and hate it, however I am having it made into what I want. So it happened to work out for me.
  • Save the picture of the one you love and wait till about 10 months out.  Then if you still love that dress and they don't make it anymore either get it used or have a seamstress make a replica.
  • I think it depends on you.  You know yourself better than any of us know you.  If you are indecisive or change your mind/style often, you should wait. I am getting married December 31, 2010, and found the dress I love last month.  It is being custom fit, and won't be in until February/March.  I know I made the right decision, because I don't change my mind very often.  If you have any doubts, wait.
  • Please don't buy the dress.
  • Don't buy it yet!  At least keep an eye on it and since you have such a long time maybe you'll be able to find it at a trunk or sample sale and save some cash on it!
  • Bridesrighthand is right . . .  I purchased three dresses for my beach wedding.  Oops.  Third one is the charm.  Now to sell my first two and stop looking at more gorgous gowns!!!  Write the designer and they may be able to tell you for how long they will feature the dress.
  • Did you try on the dress? If not, be aware that it might not work for you. I fell in love with several dresses just from website photos, but once I tried them on they looked like crap on me. The dress I bought is nothing like what I originally thought I wanted. (And my mind changed several times when I was just Internet-surfing for ideas, even in a few months' timespan). Even if you've tried it on and love it, I'd wait. Save a bunch of photos from it (different angles and detail shots) and the name/style number, and wait until about 10-12 months out to buy it if you still love it by then. If it's not available, I'll bet that you can find a similar one from another designer ... I haven't seen all that many dresses that are SO unique that they can't be found elsewhere.

  • I would definitely wait. Like everyone else said... in 6 months you'll be on here saying you hate it and you want another. I'm getting married in Aug. 2010, under a year from now, and I haven't tried 1 dress on yet. There's plenty I love in pictures, but I dont want to order it so far in advance because 1. I'll probably change my mind, and 2. I'm planning on losing tons of weight.
  • Definitely too soon... I agree with PPs, that it's doubtful that between now and when you *should* order that the dress will be unavailable.
  • Well I'm getting married in May of 2010 and I'm now going on dress number 4. I found this dress i really liked off of ebay right after we got engaged in April 2008 and then I got it and didn't like it so I sold it, then I bought another dress, same thing got it and then sold it.. Then I went October 2008 to buy a dress and bought one that I really liked but now, I don't want it as it doesn't fit me as well as when I bought it so now that's up for sale too. Now my wedding is in 9 months and I'm back to the drawing board.. My fiance has informed me that if I change my mind again after I buy a new dress that i'm gonna be wearing my underwear down the aisle
