Mom allergic to dress - advice?

So my dress experience has been surprisingly difficult! First I bought a great dress before knowing anything about my wedding (Demetrios 3026 for sale :-) ) and realized it didn't really fit with my formal winter evening wedding. So I became a two dress bride when I fell in love with PoB Vineyard Maeve!! I was afraid to tell my mom but when she saw it she fell in love too.The other day I tried it on for her so we could figure out the bustle and everything and we both realized the dress is silk and she sometimes has a bad reaction to silk - nothing major but her eyes get watery and itchy. So that happened and my heart sank.I really don't want to look for a third dress and I feel like she could take benedryl or an allergy medicine but I don't want my mom to be uncomfortable in any way and I want to be able to be around my mom and have her help me get dressed etc... What do you think?? TIA

Re: Mom allergic to dress - advice?

  • How bad it is?  Can she be in the same room?  Can she stand next to you for pictures?   I know my mom can be around my cats, but if she touches them and than touches her eyes there is a reaction.  So she always needs to wash her hands. Also with the meds, they cause different reactions in people.  Benedryl wipes me out.  So she would want to talk with her doctor or test meds prior to make sure there is no reaction.  This really stinks... sorry.

  • Have her call her doctor and see what they recommend.  I have terrible allergies, but I take a Zyrtec every night before bed and I'm fine.

  • Yeah she can be in the same room, it is contact that bothers her. Good call about effects of drugs... I will talk to her and see what she thinks. We could limit contact but I feel like there would have to be some. I need to hug my mom!!
  • This may seem silly... but in additons to meds.  What about hand wipes.  You know, the kind you get when you eat ribs.  She can just wash her hands quickly after contact or throughout the night.  Plus there is a good chance she will be crying anyway  :)

  • That stinks! I agree about the wipes though. She can make sure she wipes after touching you, so she doesn't get it in her face. Good luck!

  • that is the same dress i wore :) it is made of silk tafetta. wear the dress you want, your mom can deal and take a bendaryl. it is not going to be like she will be standing next to you all day. Plus she didnt have a reaction at the tiem you tried it on...so I dont see a problem.

  • I don't have a pic that I can get at work - Just on my mom's camera right now! But yeah it is gorgeous so I reeeally want to wear it.My mom didn't have a reaction the first time b/c she wasn't there.. :-(  That's why I had to muster up the courage to tell her!!!Veronabrit - I know! I actually saw your pics before I made my final decision to buy it and they were so gorgeous I had to get it too :-)  I think I will keep the bow even though I originally thought I wouldn't!
  • I think if she can be in the same room with you then you should get your dream dress and just make sure she washes her hands after she helps you get ready. And if its itchy eyes that are the issue she doesn't even need benadryl she should use an allergy reducing eye drop.My sister has the same issue with Wool and Cats totally kill me in terms of allergies.
  • PS Maeve was one of my top choices as well! Great dress!I realized it looked familiar as I was trying it on and when I got home I visited my facebook account and realized a girl I went to high school with married a guy I went to high school with and she wore the dress....the kicker was that he was my ex-boyfriend!!!
