When to Buy A Dress?

Hi All, I recently went out the other night with a couple other of my girlfriends who are also engeged to try on wedding dresses. Mind you  this was only supposed to be a fun, ladies night out, and not the night to find THE ONE or purchase a gown. I didn't even know which style of dress I really wanted.Well I found THE ONE! I absolutely fell in love with it and my friends say I was glowing and smiling from ear to ear. The other dresses I tried on never even compared to it.So when I called my parents up to tell them the news, my father said for me to keep looking at other places. And my FI thinks the same way he does, afriad that I'll buy this dress but keep searching online and in magazines and will end up wanting to buy a new dress down the road.My wedding is not until Spetember 2010, so I still have a year. Is it crazy to purcahse my gown this early in advance? Ladies, when you've found THE ONE, you just know right? Well I know this is my dress. My mother and I are going back tonight for me to try it on for her, and I hope we'll purchase it. So excited! It seems like everything comes together once you've fund the dress. So am I crazy for finding THE ONE this early on? When did you all find your dresses? Thanks for your assistance,Jennifer

Re: When to Buy A Dress?

  • oops- spelt a word worng: * Engaged. I type way too fast.
  • No I don't think a year is too early. I ordered my dress 14 months in advance. I think it becomes important to stop looking at dresses once you purchase though, but that advice goes for everyone.

  • No buying one year in advance is ok but you might want to shop around a little more now just in case because once you buy you can not look anymore being a two dress bride is not ideal!Do you have the website with pro pictures or pictures of you in the dress?
  • Buying a year in advance is normal because it can take six months for the bridal salon to get the gown. You will also need a couple of months for alterations. Personally, I was so glad when I ordered my dress because it sets the tone for the wedding and I was able to move forward with my planning.
  • You're fine on time, they do typically take 4-6 months to come in, at least that's what I've been told about my Casablanca.  The only thing I would say is to be super sure, I found my dress at the first store I went to, but still went to three other stores over a couple weeks to be absolutely sure, then I went back to the original store and ordered it.
  • bought mine 9 months out.  came in 7.
  • Its not too early as long as you stop looking after you have purchased.  Good luck, and I hope your mom loves it too!
  • I don't think it's too early. I'm also getting married in September 2010 and I bought my dress 2 months ago. When you find THE dress just buy it bc you will keep thinking about it. I also wanted to get my dress early bc it takes so long to come in and alterations can take a very long time.

  • I found THE ONE at the 2nd shop I went to.  It was the first dress of many at that store, but the only one I wanted.  I see other dresses and still love only my dress.  Look at a few other stores/styles b4 u put the $ down just so u don't have any regret.  My only other suggestion is if you want to lose weight, wait on the dress.  I lost 12 pounds with the intentions of losing another 30 and was told yesterday not to lose anymore weight.  That ticked me off b/c I asked before ordering if there was a limit on how much I could lose - they said no, it's easier to take in than let out.  but maybe you're already the size you want to be or don't plan on losing a lot.
  • Thank you everyone. After reading some of your posts that evening, I felt much better about my decision on the dress.  My mother came with me that night and she broke down in tears seeing me in it. Least to say we ended up buying the dress that night! I am so happy and excited! And since I ordered the dress, it won't be in until December, so it's a perfect amount of time.I'm a personal trainer, and as thin as i think I'll ever be, so I don't need to worry about losing weight- but thank you to the person who brought weight loss up in your post. It's def. something all brides need to consider.Thank you again everyone for all your help!~Jennifer
