Thoughts on my wedding dress, please!

Hey All!I'm getting married 2/20/2010 in Nassau and I just got my dress, but as I have so much time before we get married, I am starting to overthink things.  I got Maggie Sottero's A3300  - here's a link:  http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?line=d&style=AD3300 Honestly, I think the dress is even prettier in person than in the pic.  Initially, I fell in love with the dress and was really excited about it - now I keep thinking about all those crystals on the bust.  Are that many crystals considered tacky?  We are doing a less formal ceremony too - I'm hoping the dress won't be overkill.  Also, as we are doing a beach wedding, I am thinking of cutting off the train.  The people at the bridal store were not loving that idea, but I think it would be much more manageable and still look very nice.  Basically, I'm just looking for other brides thoughts on all of this.  It would be greatly appreciated!

  • Clicky: http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=AD3300I think the dress is perfect for a beach wedding.  It's very pretty and if you decide to cut off the train, I still think it will look great.
  • That is not even close to being tacky! If you loved it initially, you will love it when you wear it for your wedding. The dress will most definitely NOT be overkill either - it's a destinations gown and is designed for beach weddings. She's even on the beach in the picture! It's perfect! I am also getting married outside and do not want a train for the same reason. I have also been getting the same comments from the people at the bridal store, and everyone else. I don't know who says you have to have a train for your wedding, but you don't. It's entirely up to you. You could keep the train and make everyone else happy, but they won't be wearing it so it shouldn't matter what they think. If you really like the way the train looks but are worried about it being too much to deal with you could have it shortened into a sweep train and leave only about a half a foot on the ground. If you don't want it dragging on the ground, you could either get it removed as you initially wanted or you could keep it bustled through the ceremony as well. If you do this, I highly recommend getting it tacked into place - my sister's bustle was beautiful but it was not pinned into place and it fell out of place and it looked awful. You couldn't see the design and there were points where the fabric folded in all of her post ceremony photos. Enjoy your dress and have it exactly the way you want it without regard to others' opinions. You are the only one that will be wearing it and you should love it 100%.
  • I think that dress will be really gorgeous for a wedding outside.  The crystals will catch the sunlight and you'll be shimmery.  The only thing about cutting off the train is, if you plan to sell it afterward.  If you do, don't cut off the train as most people will want it.  I would have it bustled and leave it at that.  Or, order the train in a very short sweep (the dress store should be able to order this in a custom length, easily).Either way, good choice. :)
  • Thanks so much for your thoughts on this!  It definitely makes me feel better about it!  I think the plethora of choices and the fact that I still have a good six months before the wedding makes it hard to feel that I already found 'the right one'.  Still not decided on the train - I'll definitely get it significantly shortened into a sweep or possibly still remove the whole thing. I really don't want to have to bother with it staying in place all day and into the night.  My close friend got married 2 weeks ago and all the ties in the bustle ended up ripped and they had to spend all kinds of time during the reception trying to fix it with safety pins!  The train looks good for the pix, but beyond that, I don't think it is something good for me.  Thanks again for the help everyone!

  • I think it is a great dress and you have the right idea about cutting off the train.  It will make the dress less formal and, I think, better for your beach wedding.  Plus you won't have to worry about the bustle and it will be more manageable.
  • It's a very pretty dress! GL!

  • I think this dress is gorgeous!!! The crystals will look beautiful in the sunshine. I love it! I love the train too... you can bussel it up afterwards, but for the ceremony, I think it is fabulous! good luck!
  • It is sooo pretty!  Not tacky at all!
  • Defenitly not overkill!! I think it is perfect, beautiful, elegant, classy. Don't forget that this is your one chance at being a princess for a day. I went through the exact thoughts you did, b/c my wedding is in the morning and on the beach and my dress is like very very formal! But you know what, it only happens once so don't worry about what other people will think. And just my opinion, this is the only time you will get to wear a dress with a train, don't pass that up!
  • Your dress is beautiful, please don't overthink things! My daughter had a similar dress, and when she placed the order, we requested the train be shortened by 19".  When it came in, the train size was perfect for the fabric of dress (chiffon-y).  The shorter train looked much better than the longer one.
  • P.S.  She had to pay an additional $200 for the designer to change the pattern for the shorter train, but like I said, it was perfect!
  • It's not tacky at all. Personally, I think it's fine just the way it is, train and crystals and all.I wouldn't cut off the train. It's not really long, and you risk ruining the dress...not to mention, people will be staring at your back, so this adds to the detail!
