Seamstress chargin $25 to look at dress

I just got my dress last week at ROB and I want to get an estimate from the seamstress who alters my clothes for how much it would cost to fix the dress. Her assistant told me she charges $25 to look at the dress but will include it in the price for alterations if I choose her.Is that normal?Do I get the dress cleaned before I get it altered or the other way around? I'm not getting married until the end of June so I'm not sure when I should get it altered. And should I store it properly until I get it altered so it doesn't yellow? Here is my dress: http://fashionbride.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/bienal.jpg

Re: Seamstress chargin $25 to look at dress

  • Wait until at least April.  I don't know about the "look at" fee, but if you trust this seamstress, seems like a pretty good bet.  Just make sure you check beforehand that she has lots of experience with altering wedding dresses.
  • She's the seamstress for the bridal store below her. Should I preserve my dress until I get it altered?
  • If she is in high demand, seems normal You shouldn't need to preserve your dress, provided you live in a smoke free pet free home (or have access to one) and can keep it out of the light

  • I agree with Becs but I would recommend that you get your dress cleaned now if you're planning on cleaning it (Is it a sample?). You shouldn't need to clean it after the alterations are finished, just pressed or steamed to get out the wrinkles.

  • Definitely store it properly. Try to keep it away from the sun. Wrap it in a cotton sheet or get one of those fabric breathing garment bags. Try to lay it out instead of hang it if you can.
  • Please keep your dress away from the floor. I luckily had my wedding dress stored in a plastic garment bag when a pipe burst in my apartment and left 3 inches of water on the floor. Luckily my dress survived without a drop of water on it because it was in a plastic garment bag.
