Black BM dresses

I really want to do black bridesmaids dresses, kneelength. My mom thinks that black bridesmaid dresses make a wedding seem like we're in mourning, but I think it looks elegant. Not to mention, black is very flattering. My dress is sort of vintage looking, with lace and a little embellishment and is ivory. What are you thoughts? Black or no black?

Re: Black BM dresses

  • I think that you would be fine going with black. Afterall, black is vintage too. I am wearing a lace ivory dress as well, and I am staying away from satin for my BM dresses. IMO I don't think it looks right. I am leaning more towards chiffon for their dresses. I also saw a knottie who's BM's picked some super cute black linen tea length dresses from White House BLack Market. I hope that helps. :-)
  • As the saying goes: Black is the new black.I'm all about black for weddings. Its very formal! My wedding dress is black, and if we had a wedding party, they would be in black, too. Black IS very flattering and elegant, especially for knee-length. Just don't get something too "plain" (for example an A-line, no accent fabric) and it will be very obvious to those attending that is not a time for mourning but you are celebrating! Try a style with a sash in another color against the black, or something lacy in black. This is YOUR day, do what you want!
  • If I could do everything over again, I would have gone with black dresses (it wasn't in my color scheme but my girls would have definitely been able to wear them again). Your mom is probably a bit old fashioned and doesn't see it as a proper wedding color but times have changed and every color is acceptable for a wedding (some honestly shouldn't be, but hey, that's my opinion). Go with black.

  • My BMs will be wearing black dresses. In fact two of them found the style they want and I know I would wear that dress again.
  • PS- the dresses they are picking from are any chiffon fabric from the Jasmine B2 line.
  • I would google image search "black bridesmaid dresses" and find a group picture of a real wedding with black dresses and nice flowers and show your Mom. That way she can see how nice/formal they can look.

  • I love the idea of black dresses!  My mom also HATES the idea ;)  I found so many cute pics of black dresses with cute flowers and she still was not impressed.  I'm using black and white damask accents and thought it would be awesome.  I have decided not to do black not just because of my mother but also because I want long dresses (long story - I really want BMs in long but the BMs, especially MOH, have made it clear that they want short so I might cave but I really want long) and with an afternoon wedding in May I decided that long and black was just a bit too formal.
  • I puffy heart back BM dresses, and most Bms do as well. Mine also wore them.
  • I really love black BM dresses as well. I was considering them at first (before I set my color scheme) but I did get a lot of negative opinions from older women. I think back in the day everyone wore poofy pastel colored dresses (think Steel Magnolias) and they haven't gotten over that. I think if you love black and can stand up to a few old ladies then you're set! :)
