If you have plus size BMs...

How are you handling the whole dress shopping experience?I am a size 14/16 in street clothes but trying on wedding dresses has been fine because I'm not going for form fitting styles, so they just clip them shut and it's all good. However, I tried on a few BM dresses to get an idea of what I liked and could barely get some of the samples on... a few of my girls are a few sizes larger than me, so they literally will not be able to try on any dresses. My MOH suggested David's Bridal because they have larger sized samples, and separates so they could each pick a top style that suits them. Are there any other similar types of stores?Or, if not, are you just not having them try them on... or what?

  • I am having them try them on- sometimes they dont fit but they hold them tighter. The thing I do though is I ask the women helping us to let the BM get their own dresses off the rack, because I know mine feel a little self conscious.

  • David's Bridal and Alfred Angelo's are both pretty good about having a larger variety of sizes available; I've gone shopping with plus sized friends and had no trouble trying things on.  You definitely want to see it on before you buy it, because it might turn out to be not very flattering at all. That said, I gave my girls a couple of basic requirements (black with some silver) and let them go nuts, so they're not limited to bridal shops.  I know one of them has her eye on a dress from Torrid.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • All of my attendants are between  size 12-16. Two of them are going with me Saturday to start my dress shopping. They are all wearing different dresses though, I sent of them  pictures of 2 dresses from the designer I chose and they picked the dress they liked...as long as it came in the colors of my wedding. Attendants usually know what will look good on them, I wouldn't worry about them not being able to try on a dress.I also agree with a previous post, I don't care for DB. When you are a plus size woman, fabric means alot, the fabrics DB uses aren't that great. You can try on styles at DB, but I would go to Alfred Angelo, Dessy, etc. for the actual dresses.
  • One of of my girls was a 28 street size, another was a 16 and the last 14/16 so we had some challenges. We shopped around tried things on and ultimatly bought dresses sight unseen. Everyone loved them and they looked great on all (PIB)
