Any plus size brides who can give advice?

I am very anxious/somewhat embarrassed about going to start looking for dresses.  I had a couple of questions and was wondering if you could help...1 - what designers have plus size dresses?2 - how do you go and try on sample sizes if they only go up to a size 10?I called one salon today in my area and asked them if they had any plus-size samples.  The lady laughed and said "No" in a very condescending tone.  It made feel horrible...I am going to make a trip to David's Bridal because I know they have sample plus size gowns, but I was hoping to find another designer...Thanks for taking the time to read this.  I appreciate your help!

Re: Any plus size brides who can give advice?

  • Greetings my "more to love" friend :)  I am a size 16 which is equal to dress size 20.  Every place I went had dresses that would accommodate me and if I saw a size 10 dress I loved I was still able to put it on and have it pinned to me but obviously could not zip it up.  Most designers do sizes 0 to 32 so if you're bigger than a 32 then I would maybe worry.  I found the following designers to be very accommodating:Da VinciMon CheriImpressions
  • I totally understand what you are feeling...I was not looking forward to shopping for my dress at all (trust me)  I however knew of a couple shops in the area that had all sizes, but I found my dress at the first shop so didn't have to look all over (I don't enjoy shopping).    My dress is by Allure.  If you go to a website for the shop, most of them will have a list of the designers they carry.  Then you can go to the designer website and see if they have dresses in larger sizes.   Another thing was that the bridal store lady told me almost any dress with the corset back (the ones that lace-up) will fit a number of people.   Good Luck and HAVE FUN!!!
  • Call ahead to different bridal salons in your area prior to making an appointment. Many designers have dresses that include plus sizes. david's Bridal does have alot to choose from. The good thing about going there is you'll have many sizes to try on and can get an idea of what cut looks best on you. After that you can look on line at other designers dresses and have a specific dress ordered in your size. I know it can be discouraging not to just be able to go anywhere but just let yourself have fun and know that you'll look beautiful.
  • Thank you for your posts.  It makes me feel better know other people have gone through the same thing.  I am going to research some designers that you have mentioned and then find salons in the area that carry them.  I am about a 20, so I know that the size of the wedding dress will be bigger (why the heck do they do that?!?!).*HUGS* to all

  • I am a plus size bride, I do recommend starting out at Davids, they have tons of styles in larger sizes, at least that way you can get an idea on what type of dress that you like.I started out at DB and after trying on tons of dresses I knew I wanted a drop waist ball gown.  The dress that I feel in love with an bought I tried on in a size 12 but after trying on tons of other dresses I got the feel on how it would look.I couldn't have been happier with my decision.  I love my dress.
  • Hello fellow voluptious women (sorry for sp!) My dress is Sottero and Midgley, but here are the guidelines I found that helped me find a dress (I'm a street size 14 wedding dress size 18-20): 1) Big boobs + sweetheart neckline = FABULOUS combination 2) Corsets (either inside the zipper or as the back of the dress) will cinch you in and give you definition in the waist. 3) I don't know if this is true for all, but for me, ballgown silhouettes balanced my top and my bottom. The inverted box pleat is a beautiful thing. 4) Don't be afraid if they don't have your size. Many salons carry slips for modesty, and a good salon should have these really strong clips and will clip the dress to your bra or other undergarments to give you a good sense of what the dress will look like from the front. 5) Don't worry about the number. Find a dress that YOU love. I started crying when I found mine - and so did my mom. It took a few different salons, but each dress I tried on helped me realize what I DIDN'T like in a dress. Take your time - and have FUN doing it!

  • My dress is a Mori Lee gown.  They have larger sizes and actually just added an entire line just for plus sized ladies.  And their prices are very very reasonable.  Check them out!!  www.morilee.com.As far as trying on plus sized gowns, call around to many different shoppes, ignore any snotty remarks or tones.  You are on the hunt for your dream dress!  Don't let anyone ruin your fun!!

  • We had a dress shop here in town that I went into (it was called Chic Boutique)...she sold Alfred Angelo dresses...Anyhow..just to get an idea of what size I would need, she let me try on a few....jeans-I wear from a 12 to a 14..depending on how they are made...tops...lol...lg, to a 1x, cause I am rather large up top...I got my dress -tags still on from EBAY-thanks to the nice dress shop lady...I knew what size to order....a size 22 to fit the chest size area....but of course, I had to have taken in down the side for everything else....I had went to another store..and yeah...I got the we don't have that size too...they must think every one getting married must be a size 2 or something....or that plus size gals don't get married in pretty dresses!  You go girl...find your beautiful dress and have fun!
