Dress doubts & is this alteration possible?

I'm a little less than 2 months away away from my wedding and I have recently been having major doubts about my dress.  I dreaded the dress shopping experience so I waited kind of late to start looking (end of June) and I rushed through trying dresses on.  I don't know if my doubts are from normal questioning or did I really pick the wrong dress and rush it too much.  Don't get me wrong, I think my dress is beautiful, I am just questioning if it will look as good once it's on me.  I had my heart set on the POB Maeve, but the bridal shop I went to did not carry it (ironically they had just put in their order for a sample, but didn't know an exact date of when they would get it in.)  I ended up getting the POB Sophie.http://www.priscillaofboston.com/dress_detail.jsp?gid=600&sfid=50700&f=We had plans to make the straps a little bit more substantial, but now I am wondering if it would be possible to put some kind of bodice in it and make it strapless.  Is this nuts?  Will the people at the boutique look at me like I'm an idiot if I ask this?  I don't know anything about alterations and what is/isn't possible, so anyone who does please clue me in!

Re: Dress doubts & is this alteration possible?

  • Honestly, that dress needs the straps both for the aesthetic and for the function.  I think it is beautiful and you are probably just having some dress doubts.  I would leave the straps on.
  • I love the dress! I think it looks best with the straps and because of the deep V would be very hard to have strapless!
  • Ditto razdazzle.  I think it looks great as it is.

  • It would be very difficult to make that dress strapless, it looks like the straps are there for a real purpose. It's very pretty as is
  • I don't know anything about alterations and I know it won't help if I tell you that I think the dress is beautiful as it is.  I know because I'm also having doubts about my dress.  Everyone says it's beautiful but I think I rushed the decision so now I'm really worried that it is just the wrong dress for me.  I loved it the day I tried it on so I bought it.  The one in the store actually fit with just minor adjustments!  Then they told me that I could not return it.  I've had them make alterations  (you can see it at http://www.palomablanca.com/ click gown collection and search for style 3856) like replacing the bow with a plain taupe sash but I don't know if this will be enough.  I had the same feelings as you. I was dreading the dress search and then rushed because at the time we only had 2 months before moving to Germany.  I knew I didn't have much time so I hope that my doubts are only due to the rush I experienced.  My fiance has not seen the dress but whenever I worry about it he reminds me that it'll be beautiful day and the dress isn't that important. It helps some days ;-) I guess my point it, when your rushed, I think it is normal to have seconds thoughts.  I've even thought about selling the dress and buying another.  I know this doesn't help much but you're not alone.  For what it's worth, I think your dress is beautiful!
  • The dress is very pretty. I think the V is too deep to make strapless. What about making it a halter style? You could maybe add some slight beadwork. But I'm skeptical about that. I think that might take away from the dress.
  • I have to agree that your dress is super gorgeous as it is! I think that you are just having normal dress doubts that most of us go through... I don't think that you could make your gown strapless because the straps are really holding up the dress. I would just focus on another part of your wedding :) You will look gorgeous in your gown!!!
  • Thanks everyone for your feedback.I will just wait and see I guess...ask the consultants what their take is.  I just keep going back and forth.  I am even doubting changing the straps (to make them wider) because I don't know if it will change the look of the dress too much.  I'm just not good at envisioning what it will look like, I have to see it to know if I will like it or not.  Oh well, we will see.I do agree, it is a beautiful dress and it is very "me" even though I didn't think I would want something so poofy.  I didn't want any kind of beading or embellishment, and the fabric and pockets make it more modern and less princess-y (IMO anyway.) I have wider shoulders so a halter is a no-go.  I'm thinking it will either be left as is or just widening the straps.  Thanks for everyones input.
  • I got the same dress and had major doubts when it arrived. I am doing alterations to make it tea length. See my planning bio under bride's attire. I'm not sure about making it strapless unless you get a very talented seamstress to change the bust line and make it more like the POB Maeve. When I told them I had doubts POB let me try on the sample again and they pinned it up to give me an idea of how a tea length might look. I should have my first trial fitting with a private seamstress this weekend and will try to add more photos in my bio. I would like to add when I tried on the sample again I felt really good about the dress before they made it tea length. I think it just comes in really wrinkled and didn't make me too excited. Plus they don't clothespin your dress at all pre-alterations so it doesn't get stained/damaged. Once it fits you better and is pressed you may love it again. I would ask the store to try on their sample with your salesperson and the store seamstress to play around with alteration possibilities. Good luck:)!
  • You look gorgeous in your dress bcnoelle!  The tea-length looks very good on that dress and I love that you can see your shoes.
  • Thanks so much.  I can't wait to try it on after some of the major alterations this weekend.  If the dress is really not for you, I would consider selling it brand new on a website.  You probably would lose some $, but at least you can buy something you really feel is you.  I felt really guilty about the $ after I bought it and kept telling myself that I would just make some $ selling if after.  Now I know that I probably won't make much money since I'm altering it so much, but I feel like it is so much more me so it's worth it.
