Wedding Gown Measurements: hip size doesn't matter?

I was told by a bridal salon employee that if you're buying an A-line or ball gown dress, then the hip size doesn't matter, all that matters is the bust and waist size.  Does anyone know if this is really true? Thanks!!

Re: Wedding Gown Measurements: hip size doesn't matter?

  • I'm not sure that is true. My bridal salon took my hip measurements and told me the size measurements including the hips for the A line dress I wanted to order. She even told me I had to loose an inch in the hips for it to fit right.
  • unless the hip size is WAY off from your measurements, it's probably no big deal.  Fit to the places on the dress (like bust and waist) that the dress actually is snug too, unless the dress is cut to be snug to the hips too.  We did this with a bunch of the BM dresses, and they all fit great!
  • They take the measurements, but you certainly don't worry much about them. For my dress, one size was perfect for everything but waist, which was 1 inch too small. the next size up was the right waist size, but the bust and hips were a good 2-3 inches too large. We went with the larger size because, with the ballgown skirt, hips are almost irrelevant and it's easy to take in the bust. We wanted to make sure that it fit well through the waist. Unless your hips are a good 1-2 inches larger than the dress hip measurements, I think you'd be fine with A-line or ballgown since they poof out.
