Question about stays in dress--Casablanca 1918

Has anyone tried on or bought a Casablanca 1918?  I really love this style, but I was disappointed when I tried it on and could notice a visible line around my lower abdomen where the corset stays end in the dress.  The store owner said it would be less pronounced if I were in the right size dress (sample dress was size 4), but she also said it would still be there, only less noticable.  Anyone have any thoughts about this?  The last thing I want to be is self conscious on my wedding day, but the dress is really beautiful overall.

Re: Question about stays in dress--Casablanca 1918

  • Good question! I've been wondering about these stays, or what some call boning.  I'd like to take them out of the bust and show off a natural ample bust (sort of flattened and squeezed up) on their own, Romeo and Juliet style (from the original movie!).  These stays, or whatever they are, make the bustline stick out unnaturally and away from the chest it seems, not matter the right size or tailoring, on almost every photo I see of most brides.  Any opinions on this one?
  • My dress is a 1918 - I fell in love with it the minute I put it on! I didn't really notice the lines when I tried it on (and it was pretty close to the right size). I've worn other dresse with the boning and it hasn't really bothered me so I'm not worried about this one either. My actual dress hasn't come in yet, but when it does, I can let you know after I try it on again!
  • My 1846 had boning.  When it was altered correctly you couldn't notice it.  I think the store owner is right that when you have it in the right size, and when you have it fitted to your body, you won't be able to notice it.

  • I am wearing the Casablanca 1918. When I tried on the sample I didn't notice anything it was a little big but close to my size. I think if the dress was fitted on you it would be fine and nobody would really notice anyway. That dress is so beautiful and I love it.
  • I LOVE the Casablanca 1918 dress. My wedding isn't until October 2010. If anyone is interested in selling their dress PLEASE let me know!I don't think the boning is an issue if it is fitted right...and I am sure you'll be to beautiful to to notice : )
