Buying a dress I have never tried on + Some drama!

There is some drama behind my dress because I have never tried it on. Long story short: I have tried on several dresses, several styles and I am one of the lucky ones who can wear the fullest ball gown and look like a mannequin. However, none of them had a corset! I am a corset freak, so my dream dress was ultimately a big ball gown with an AWESOME corset. I found the ultimate dress, (and it was even cheaper than the one I halfheartedly picked out at David's), but everyone in a 50 mile radius that carried the line didn't have it in stock. I went to one bridal shop b/c the owner said that she would work something out with me, and when she called Mary's to see if she could order a sample, she found out that the dress was discontinued and out of stock!! She then begged and pleaded for them to make this dress for me, and they said that they could. So, I ultimately put a deposit down on a dress I have never tried on, but knowing how awesome it's going to look. My side of the family is excited, but my FI and FMIL are really peeved. Any similar experiences? Comments? What should I do to help calm down my FI and his family?

  • If you are excited about it then it shouldn't matter what fi + his family think about the dress.  Their job is to show up and tell you that you look beautiful, no matter what you are wearing.  You know what you want, you bought it.  Let them no that this will be the gown that makes you happy.  That should be all they need to know.
  • It's pretty risky. You do know that it's relatively simple to change a zip-back gown into a corset back, right?  It probably would have been a better idea to buy a dress you've tried on and pay an extra $100 or so for that modification.

  • I check out Maggie SOttero's website, the section called Maggie Brides and a lot of those stories include girls that ordered the dress before trying it on and it was worth the risk...I think since you have tried on the style AND got a good deal...I think you did good
  • I did the same thing...I fell in love with a picture and although I tried on lots of dresses, I just couldn't stop thinking about the one in the picture (and I called stores in the surrounding 5 states and couldn't find one in stock anywhere). So I went ahead and orderd it anyway, and it was perfect :) I'm sure you'll be fine. I will say, don't be disappointed if it doesn't fit right away though. Mine was too big even though they measured me before ordering, so when I first tried it on I wasn't exactly "wowed". But it's amazing what a few alterations can do, and it ended up being just what I wanted. so goodluck, I'm sure it will be beautiful!
  • I bought mine online. It was what I wanted and I knew I couldn't find it elsewhere. (sold exclusively on this site.) So I went ahead and bought it.  I love it and I'm glad I bought it.

  • Well, I don't think it's a good idea to buy a dress sight unseen, BUT that's inconsequential now that you've done it. So I will comment that I think it's stupid and a waste of energy for your FI and FMIL to be upset. Unless of course, you used their money for it, and they're afraid that you won't like it and waste the money.Otherwise, just shrug them off and tell them that what's done is done. And if it turns out that you don't like the dress for whatever reason... grit your teeth, smile like there's no tomorrow, and don't give them a reason to say "I told you so."
