Wearing Mom's Dress?

I absolutly love my mothers wedding dress that she wore when she married my dad some 25 years ago. Now that I am getting married I would really like to wear it or incorperate it into my wedding. It was fairly timeless in style so thats not the issue. It's more that she was 4 inches shorter and a size 6. I'm a 10. Is it even possible to get a dress altered LARGER? Or is the cost just going to be insane?

Re: Wearing Mom's Dress?

  • Take it to a seamstress and see.  Usually dresses can be taken out a couple of sizes, but the length might be more difficult.  But see what the seamstress has to say before you commit. If you just want to incorporate the dress, I know it's rather common to wrap your bouquet, and maybe the bridesmaids' as well, in fabric from the dress.  Or you can pick up a detail like a lace pattern and use that as a motif in your wedding (on your stationery, cake, and so on).

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • It might be okay, but talk to someone about it. They'll probably need to look at the dress. Also, if you wear flat shoes, length might not be an issue.

  • Someone on my local board was going to take her mom's dress to a seamstress and have them design something new out of the old dress. Even if you just change a few things, to add more fabric in, it could still look very similar to your mom's pics, only with a hint of your own aesthetic.

  • not sure about bringing it out to a size 10 - but as for length, if it's the right style, you could have it shortened even more into a tea-length or knee-length dress :)
  • I think the dress could be taken out as well as adding a corset back, length I'm not sure but I would think you could take out her underneath layers, and add your own so it would be longer and your mom's length would look like a layer...might be pretty to make your mom's skirt even shorter over the layer that fits your height and even a split front..Find a talented seamstress...I think you are looking at 400 to 500 worth of work but it will be way cheaper then a new dress with alterations and totally worth it
