Changing zip up dress to lace up dress

Hi!

I love my dress, but I really wish it was a lace up back dress.  I am 4 months from the wedding and it will not zip so I am thinking of changing it to a lace up dress.  Has anyone done this before or seen one done that way?  I just want to be sure that it will look good if I do this.  Thanks!

Re: Changing zip up dress to lace up dress

  • This is tricky, it really depends on what kind of details your dress has. Not every dress can be turned into a lace up. Also generally when you plan on having your dress turned into a corsette back the dress should be approximatly one size smaller that what is comfortable in order to allow space for the corset to be laced up properly. From what I know it is a cos of about $200 (using pre-made pannels).

Talking to a seamstress is your best bet.
  • Talk to a seamstress but you should be able to do it.  I have a dress that was a zip up that my seamstress has already turned into a lace up and they have also taken it in by 4 sizes, so it doesn't have to be smaller to make it happen.  But, as PP have said, it will depend on the details on your dress.  Mine is all lace with no beading or other details.

  • I am doing this.

it is called a corset back

Almost everyone will put them in. BUT make sure you are going to a good tailor. David's Bridal does it but I don't trust them.

I have a lady who used to make dresses from scratch so I am using here,

    They run around $150

  • I met with my seamstress this weekend and she said that it would be no problem to change the dress to a corsett back dress.  She is super nice and has been doing weddind dress alterations for 20 years.  She is only charging me $45.  It will be ready next month!!
