I don't usually advocate black unless we're talking tuxedos properly worn at an evening event.

I'd recommend either charcoal grey or navy blue if you're considering the typical lounge (aka "business") suit. If they are purchasing (which I always advocate over renting), your gentlemen will get much more mileage with grey or navy suits than black.
