Bustling the dress...

So I just purchased a beautiful Maggie Sottero dress, it has a slip gown underneath lace http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?style=12623

I worry about the cost of alterations now...and I wont get the dress for a few months. It actually fit me very well in the store, but it doesn't come with a bustle.  Is it worth paying to have the dress bustled for the reception and anyone have an idea of how much that may cost? And since the lace and the slip are separate, do you think it even could be bustled?  Thanks!

Almost every dress can be, and probably should be bustled.  Bustling will depend on the dress and the seamstress you choose.  My bustle was about $100.00, but it was a little simpler than yours.  I see around here that bustles can run anywhere from $40.00-250.00,
  • No wedding dress comes already bustled because there are tons of ways to bustle a dress.  It really comes down to what you prefer and what you think looks good with your dress.

As for the cost, bustling should not cost a lot if you get something simple done.  For your dress I would suggest either a one point american bustle or a french bustle.  Pictures below.  You would need to get the dress altered anyway because I doubt the length is correct, so a hem will most likely be needed.

IMO, it is worth paying the small fee to have the dress bustled.  If not you will either have to carry the train around on a wrist loop, which could get annoying, or risk having someone step on your train every 2 seconds.

Oh, and yes, even though the lace and slip are separate the dress can be bustled.

American bustle (also called over bustle):

    French bustle:

  • My dress has 2 layers and I will be getting it bustled. The woman who worked with me showed me a couple different bustles I could do.

As far as cost goes, I got a sheet with general alterations costs when I ordered my dress and I thought it said $9/bustle, which is way different than what PP said, so idk.

  • Thanks for all the tips, I guess its finally cathcing up to me how quickly a wedding can add up! I love the american bustle, especially since its in lace I can see it as mine!

That may mean $9/button and loop or hook and eye.  Meaning if you have a one point bustle you would pay $9 but if you have a two point like I did it would be $18 and so forth.

Of course prices vary from area to area but I do not think a hem and a bustle should run you into too much money.

For my dress I had a hem, bustle, and the strap moved from one side to the other and it cost about $140.  The hem is usually what costs because of all the layers that need to be cut/taken up with a wedding dress.

You can always look around for seamstresses and show them a picture of your dress and the kind of bustle you want and ask for an estimated price to get a better idea.

that's what I was thinking, but, wow, even that is a steal !!   I got quotes from 3 different people for my alterations, and none were less than $80.00 for the bustle.  I had an A-line chiffon gown, nothing too dramatic.  My bodice alterations were expensive, because they had to remove embellishments and put them back on after taking the bust on my dress in, but my hem and bustle cost about $160.00. My total alterations were $340.00, I think.

    My dress wasn't super fancy.

ETA:  I did have a 3 point bustle though.

Even with a three point bustle, $80 seems really high!  I wish I knew the break down in cost for my alterations but I know that the hem had to be the most expensive because of all the underlayers that had to be cut/hemmed.  Maybe my bustle was $80 too and I just don't know it!

Hahaha.   I was stunned when my total came that high.  I had originally budgeted $125.00 for alterations. I'm glad I had some extra money in the budget!
  • This is my dress http://www.stillwhite.co.nz/assets/17886_750.jpg Sottero and Midgely Colby) and I'm planning on asking for a french bustle as low as possible so it can sort of just flip up and create sort of a bubble hem/floor length look without an obvious pick up in the back.  I've never seen it done that way, but I'm hoping it's not too hard.
