Bridal Gown Underwear?

Hello everyone!

I recently bought my wedding dress when it occured to me that I probably need to buy specific underwear for it. I understand that many brides buy a bridal bra/bustier and typically a slip for their specific gown type (sheath, fit n' flare, ball gown, ect.). I don't know if there are other necessities, though I know garters and stockings are popular too.

Is any of it really necessary though? I did plan on buying a bustier, but not a slip (my dress is a sheath and even in black underwear my dress was smooth and didn't reveal anything).

Also, where are good places to buy a bustier? I know David's Bridal typically sells them, but since I didn't buy from DB, would there be other good places to look (and possibally cheaper)?

Thank you everyone for reading and helping me out! :)

  • I bought my wedding undergarmets from Kohls actually. Seems random, I know. But  before that I went to Dillards and they have tons of different wedding underwear, shapers, Spanx, bras, slips etc. specifically for wedding dresses

  • This entirely depends on how your dress is structured.  Mine has a corseted top, so I just had the seamstress sew cups in on top, and all I'm wearing underneath is a pair of the Spanx shorts that run from my knee to the bottom of my ribcage.  Your seamstress or bridal salon should be able to tell you what your specific dress might require.

This! I had a long line bra, slip and a pair of simple cotton panties.

I suggest you save the stockings and garters for your HM. Believe me when I say before the time the day is done, you will not want them on you. Keep it simple.

  • my seamstress sewed cups into my dress as well.  I may get some cute bridal-y underwear and call it a day.  All those extra layers under a big dress and you'll just get hot!
  • Ditto on having the cups sewn in. I just bought a cute pair of underwear from victorias secret to wear under my dress!

  • I wore a thong under my dress, that was it.  No slip, no bra (I had cups sewn in), no garter, etc.  It all depends on your dress and what you want to wear with it.

I bought my undies from Frederickss (<-not a typo, for some reason that word comes up blocked??) for $6, they were a cotton/lace white thong...a little 'special', but nothing terribly fancy.  I wear them under normal clothes now as well.  You don't have to spend a fortune on underthings to look good in your dress, go with as little as you can get away with since it'll likely already be hot & constricting under there anyways.

  • This is all great advise. :) I haven't thought about the many hours I would spend in something constricting or hot. I will definately keep it as simple as possible.
