I bought a copy cat dress....XP

A few days ago on my Show Me Your Dress post, a Knottie mentioned Chelsea from a Four Weddings episode had my identical dress.

After searching all over the internet, I found the designer of her dress and the Style #. Turns out, we DO have the same exact looking dress, but her particular dress is from Essence of Australia, and mine is from David's Bridal. Which means DB copied a high end designer.

Here is Essence of Australia's Website Picture in Champagne
(They also have it in Ivory and White)

I found this from Google Images

Here are DB pictures

Now I feel cheap and I'm sure the designer wouldn't be too thrilled that DB took their dress and created the exact same thing.

  • DB does work with designers. They sell some Vera Wang gowns there, that she designed specifically for DB. I woudn't be surprised if they worked with this designer as well. They might make the gowns out of a slightly different fabric in order to offer them at a lower price point. Or, like at Sams Club, they buy them in bulk so they can offer a better price. I'm sure DB didn't rip off a design (that would be a major lawsuit).

(Phew) This gives me a sigh of relief. I never knew this about DB. I knew about the Vera Wang gowns, but I wasn't aware that they were able to do this.
  • Not one single wedding dress is unique. I have seen this same style by many different designers. Like PP said, the fabric used may be different which does affect the price.

Ditto. I've seen dresses that look very similar by several different designers. The difference between DB and other designers is that they generally don't use the highest quality fabric (doesn't mean it's not good fabric, it's just less expensive than some of the other designers) and they mass produce their dresses to keep costs down, whereas designers make-to-order.

I mean heck...look at how many 'copies' there now are of Kate's dress by all kinds of designers, including DB. It's not abnormal at all...

  • Hm, well that's what designers do. Particularly cheap designers who mass produce dresses, like DB. It doesn't surprise me.

You can buy replicas of the Kate dress, the Pippa dress, the Bella dress...

Feel happy that you got a dress for a great price and that you love it!
  • If you love it don't worry about it. Even ABS (maker of many prom dresses) intentionally steals looks from the red carpet all the time and makes cheaper versions. They even promote the fact!

I'm sure you're going to look stunning in it!
  • Yeah. My dress is from DB and I found one online by DiVinci that's an exact match for it. So I'm sure DB worked with DiVinci, too.
