How to go about getting alterations done?

I'm mostly a lurker, but I was hoping to get some thoughts on Alterations at David's Bridal. Sorry if this is a bit long. (Cliff Notes at bottom)

I bought my dress in Colorado when I came back to visit family for the holidays (we recently moved out of state). My FMIL is nice enough to store it in her house until the wedding.

The question I have though is how to proceed with alterations. I was going to ask my mom or FMIL to mail me the dress and take it to a place down here in Georgia. But my mom wants me to fly back for a weekend, get the initial fitting done next month, and then take care of any last minute changes when I fly out for the actual wedding (i'll be getting there 1 week before). My worry is that doing this will leave us in a time crunch, but she thinks it will be ok.

The dress fits me really well, so really all I think I'll need done is a slight hemming (just a few inches since I got the petite size), and a simple bustle.

What would you gals do?

CN: Bought my wedding dress in Colorado, but I am now living in Georgia. Would it be better to fly back, and have alterations done there over a weekend, or ask my mom to mail me the dress and get it fitted here? It would most likely be a simple hem and bustle that needs to be done.

Thanks in advance everyone!

  • I'll be honest I would want my dress with me. You never know what is going to happen in that span of time.

I lived 3 hours from the place I bought my dress and couldn't find the time to drive that far just to get it done.

Inevitably it's up to you, but my honest opinion is have it shipped to you.

  • I'm the kind of person who panics in a time crunch, so if I were you, I'd have the dress shipped to you in GA, do all of your alterations there, and then take the dress with you to CO for the wedding.

If you decide you're okay with having that rush right before the wedding, I would make sure you have an appointment scheduled far in advance, and that the alterations people know that you are in a time crunch. You don't want to show up and have them tell you they won't be able to get it done in time.

    Good luck :)
  • I would have it shipped to you, even with something fairly simple, after they took my dress in the seamtress had to take it back for another week to move the hook and eye.  And in case you haven't already seen when you lurked on the boards, you'll be better off finding an independent seamstress rather than going to David's Bridal for your fitting.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Thanks everyone for the thoughts and suggestions! Definitely appreciated. Happy Friday to Everyone! :)
