I don't want to be a frilly cupcake! Help!

Hi everyone,
I am newly engaged and a new member to this site. My fiancee and I have been talking about getting married for a while but have never gotten around to actually sealing the deal until now. We have most of the ideas figured out for our wedding but I absolutely can not find a dress I like. I'm looking for a casual, summer style dress. I would perfer a short dress but a long one will be considered. I really don't want to look like a frilly cupcake. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I just quit being so dang picky?

Lol I know exactly what u mean, I told the people in the bridal shops don't bring anythingtrendy, no ruffles, no pickups, no bows or flowers, no tulle, no overloads of bling etc. Basically, if ill hate itin twenty years....don't bring it. I ended up with a very simple mermaid ivory gown. Try looking on j crew, white house black market (I think that's whatiys called) and David's bridal. I got mine at David's. You'll find something that isn't awful. Good luck!
  • There are some really pretty styles out there for the bride with more simple tastes. You could do a goddess-y flowy gown or a simple fitted gown with no frills or beading.

    These are some nice options:

Also, if you aren't interested in a long gown, you can visit a website like modcloth.com. They have tons of cute, white dresses you could go with.

  • Have you actually gone to try on gowns or just searched online?  It's important to get into a store to start knowing what you like, don't like, and what looks good on you.  Good luck!

<div>This. You just never know until you start trying on. When I tried on my dream dress from Maggie Sottero, I looked like a birthday cake. Now, you already know going in that you don't want the big poufy dress, so you can probably avoid that. However, the dress I wore is NOTHING like the styles I thought I was interested in, but it caught my eye in the store, and when I put it on, I never wanted to take it off. So you might try a couple of "frilly" dresses that you see in the store just to see how you look in them. They don't have to be the pouffiest of them. And you might not look like a cupcake in all of them. </div>
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I agree with PP that you need to go try dresses on. Make an appointment at a local bridal store and tell them what you are looking for. I never wanted a poofy, huge, ball gown. We are getting married on the beach in September in FL, it's going to be at least 90 degrees even at 5pm and I would die. I let them know what I was looking for and while my dress has more of a train and a little bigger than I had originally wanted, I fell in love and didn't want to take it off (I put the picture below). There are lots of options out there and you just need to start looking. Bring along a best friend or relative that knows your style and they can help. My MOH was walking around the store looking for dresses with the sales attendant and knew better than the "expert" what I would like and wouldn't.

    Just keep an open mind.

An entire section of shorter dresses. Pick out some "non frilly cupcake" ones and make an appointment
  • Thank you so much for the ideas! They will really help. I've been in one store (just a quick in and out) I saw a few dress that I liked but haven't been back yet. Most of the ones I've seen onlne are just not what I want. Looks like I'll be heading for the store Friday! Thanks again!
