Should I change the shape of the dress?

I originally went dress shopping looking for a simple dress, maybe including some lace, but definitely fit and flare shape. My bridesmaids found a few desses on clearance and brought them to me- I originally picked this dress as a "funny" pick as I am not that girly and the last thing I wanted was a "fluffy" dress. I put it on and it was like a whole new dress off the rack. I mentioned the skirt was way too poofy and the salesperson said I could easily remove some tulle and held the skirt back so I could see what it would look like. I bought it.
However, ever since I bought the dress, I keep wondering how hard it would be to convert the drop waist to a fit and flare shape. I have to have it altered anyways because I plan on losing 20 lbs... It will have to be taken in to a 6 or 8.

So question one: Do you guys think it should be altered at all? I'm not unhappy with the way it is now so I don't want to change a good thing.

Question two: Do you think that altering it to a fit and flare would be flattering on a pear shaped girl such as myself?

Changing to this shape?

I'm also open to any pictures/suggestions, I'm not great at being a girl and that was the closest I could find to what I have in my head. I just feel like right now the original dress looks like two seperate dresses stuck together and all that fluff is killing me!

I can only imagine that altering the shape to make the waist line longer would be expensive, if doable. I'm pretty sure they'd have to build an entire segment to lengthen the dress. If the whole dress was one fabric it would be different and it may be easier, but with the fabric change and detail at the drop waist, I'd say it's probably not really doable.

To answer your second question, some girls seem to be able to pull off being pear shaped and looking good in a fit anf flare. I'm very pear shaped and all those styles did was accentuate my huge hips. I may be biased since the tiny samples mostly didn't fit my hips, but the few that did made me feel wide. I found the drop waist to be the most flattering fit on my pear shape. Have you tried fit and flare dresses on? Do you like the way you look and feel in them? You still have time to buy a new dress if this ones not doing it for you.

Also, we're date twins. Good job on picking an excellent date!

  •  Thanks! It's the day before my birthday and the absolutely latest date I would allow my Fiance to pick!
I know I have time to look for a dress but $$ is another matter. I got the dress 1/2 off and it was still 1k- which makes me sick to think about. It fit our budget, just not my tolerance for spending money and I would have to sell it before I even thought about getting another dress...

Instead of changing the shape competely what about taking all that freaking tulle out? Would it look too limp?

  • I think that it is beautiful, just the way it is..... I wouldn't change it at all, I think it is really flattering too

  • It's a lovely dress. Don't forget that it's also spread out over the dias that the person is standing on. When it's hemmed to fit, it won't look nearly as pouffy as the pic.

Changing the waist will be a major expense.

  • Thanks guys, I'm going to leave the waist alone and have them take out one or two layers of tulle just to knock down the fluff a little bit and make the drop waist a more natural transition but I also think the girl in this picture is a bit shorter than me and the tulle is being pushed up by the platform.
