Too soon to get the rings?

I have a friend that designs, repairs and creates jewelery! I love it because he is willing to work with whatever I can save up and I am so grateful! Right now I already have design ready, for me, but I need some help with my FI ring. I was thinking about going in this month, but IDK if that is too early? Our wedding isn't till September of next year...

The only reason I am wanting the ring's early is because he just made a wedding ring for another couple (who happen to be my friends as well) and the ring was delayed 3 times by the gold company! They didn't even receive the ring till the day of the wedding... So I am kinda freaked and really want to get things done quick! Advice? Thoughts?

Re: Too soon to get the rings?

  • I am notoriously early for everything so maybe take my advice with a grain of salt--but I think the earlier you are for most things the better.

I see no issue in getting the rings done sooner as opposed to later. Especially with the concerns you had regarding timing and the gold company. As long as your sure your hands will not shrink or get bigger (which is uncommon) I say go for it!

  • Unlike with dresses, where you could change sizes, or invitations, where your relationship with people might change, I don't see any reason not to get rings sooner rather than later.
  • There is absolutely no harm in checking tasks off your "to do" list early.  A longer timeline with custom-made items will give you plenty of wiggle room.  Go for it!
  • I'd go earlier than later with this. Custom designs are often delayed simpley because they are one offs.

My engagement ring was this way. The first stone we sent had what was found to be a fracture this took a 9 week turn around to 11-12 to pick a new stone etc. The design we chose was then tweaked for that stone and the other stones that my fiance picked (I helped with the center he chose the others) as well as the changed I had asked for. Then they broke one of the molds for my casting because part of my ring was very delicate. In the end the whole thing took 13-14 weeks but it wasnt a big deal. We are going to order my matching wedding band in january of february but wont be married till october. Luckily the biggest worry with the wedding band is matching the stones to the ring on my hand the design itself is much simpler than the e-ring.

The advantage to custom is you get something uniquely you and one of a kind. You usually also get better quality. Like all good things you must wait though. Craftsmanship takes time. I'd vote order now so you have more time to really design what you want rather than later.

  • I got my wedding band over a year before the wedding. It is nice to spread out the expenses and get things done ASAP!
  • Better early than late, no? Go for it!

  • Yeah I'd say you're fine to knock the rings off your to do list if you want to spend the money on it now.  Just have the size checked closer to the wedding.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
