Questions when selecting a tailor?

I just ordered my totally awesome dress last week. Now I need to pick a tailor... but how do I do this? My alterations will be taking out some of the poof, probably taking the dress in a little, getting cups sewn in, possibly a hem (depending on where the dress falls when the poof is out), and possibly changing a straight neckline to a sweetheart.

I could just go with the tailor that the dress shop recommends but she is about an hour from where I live and it isn't a great drive. Are there general questions that I can ask  to get a sense of how expensive a tailor is?

Thanks!

Re: Questions when selecting a tailor?

  • I would get on your local board on here and ask who the other brides use in your area
  • i would ask ur local art college or fashion college students to do it for u.
they'll do a good job and cost less since they dont really have much of a reputation yet.
but make sure u ask lots of questions and see some of the samples of their work, like how good are they at sewing and do they know alterations.
better yet, get a student who just graduated. that way they have the knowledge of being a tailor(fashion school students.), but they dont charge the tailor's price.
but u NEED to see their samples and work, only hire them if it's flawless.
