Groomsmen in Seersucker- WTF or TFM?

So, my FH is a fraternity boy.  He wants the groomsmen to wear seersucker.  My only two concerns are 1) it's a 7:30PM July wedding, will it be too informal?  and 2) I feel like they'll be dressed more like they're heading to a college football game than to our wedding.

Any suggestions?

My FH just told me I should ask, "Is seersucker cool, yay or nay?"

PS.  He also wants them to wear bow ties.  Note 1) He looks geeky enough already (and I love him for it), but he doesn't need any more help to do so, and 2) He is fratty, and I am not.

Re: Groomsmen in Seersucker- WTF or TFM?

  • I love seersucker and bow ties.  That being said, I think it might be too informal for a 7:30 ceremony.
  • I don't think it's formal enough for an evening wedding.

That said, you get to pick what you and your BMs wear, he gets to pick what he and his GM wear.

Haha TFM love it. My FI and I were both greek in college so I understand. He wants bowties too but I think they will look kind of funny with tuxes. My guys are wearing bow ties with their sport jackets during the rehearsal. I can't deny them of their bowties lol. I think they're going to wear matching Vineyard Vines ties for the ceremony, that's pretty fratty without being too "tailgate-ish".
  • I don't think fraternity at all when I see seersucker, I think Kentucky derby, but maybe I'm weird like that. Seersucker is a daytime fabric I think though.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with bow ties. If you've ever read the Style Guy on GQ (totally my guilty pleasure) he constantly makes a case for bow ties:

  • I think it's a great look, and since summer is generally more casual anyway, there's not necessarily anything wrong with seersucker in the evening.

One question: do the guys already have the suits, or if not, would it be cost-effective to rent them? Something tells me that as a speciality item, they could be pretty costly to rent, though I've never tried to do it myself. :)
  • Don't get me wrong, some guys can definitely rock the bow tie and make it look sexy.  My FI isn't really one of them, though.  Again, love him anyway.

@SD3194: Vineyard Vines ties are a great idea!  Thanks a lot!

@sister2groom: I think seersucker & fraternity are more correlated in the south (at least that's what my FI said).

@opalsky007:  That's a great point!  I'll definitely have to check that out.
  • What is it with guys and the seersucker?  My DH wears these seersucker shorts all the time and wants to get a seersucker suit, to which I reminded him we live in Chicago - not the deep South.

I'm not a fan, but again it's not a thing in Chicago.  I know there are other areas where it's a bit more stylish.
  • What tone are you setting for the wedding?  If you're planning a more casual evening outdoor wedding or something, I think it could be fine.  If not, I think seersucker is too casual.
  • Love the searsucker for summer weddings!

I think it's more preppy rather than fraternity but that's just me :)

Honey, you are in Atlanta!  There's going to be seersucker at your wedding and there will be bowties at your wedding, even if the boys don't wear it!

When I first moved to Virginia, I was under the impression that seersucker was for children and little, old men.  Bowties were definitely for old men.  My, how my opinion has changed.  :)

Now, I will say that it reads a little fratastic to me, but if you're in your 20s, being fratastic is probably still a virture.  :)

  • i LOVE seersucker!
but i agree w/ PP.  too casual for an evening wedding.  but keep the bow ties!
  • I'm a fan of the seersucker too!  I think it super preppy and super cute to do it for a wedding, especially with the bowties.

How casual or formal is your wedding?  I know its at a later time, but some people are now having casual weddings later at night.  I think that will determine if they are appropriate or not.

  • It's kinda formal.  The girls will be in cocktail length dresses, but my dress is pretty formal.  I just think that next to my dress, it will look too casual.

@ludachris315: I had to google what TFM meant when my FI used it the first time, too.  Haha.  I just acted like I knew what he was talking about.
  • HAHA First of all, I work at a university in the south and TFM is a site we read in our office to get comic relief...because sometimes it hits WAY too close to home lol. Love it.

I think that seersucker would be perfect for the rehersal dinner and then suits with bowties for the wedding.  My boss is TFM and he did this for his wedding.  It was an evening wedding the guys looked great.  They still rocked the bowties (TFM) but kept it formal. with suits
  • Tell them they can wear the seersucker for the bacherlor party/gift
