Prom dress instead of wedding gown

What do you all think of wearing a prom dress instead of a wedding gown? I know they make white prom dresses that are really nice. I am on a budget and don't want a dress with a train... not to mention I am not a "girly girl" and don't really want to spend a ton of money on a dress that I'm going to wear once. I still want to look classy and beautiful on my special day, I just don't want to break the bank. I know there are some nice wedding gowns at David's Bridal that aren't too expensive but thought that a prom gown might work as well.

Re: Prom dress instead of wedding gown

  • I think that there are plenty of prom dresses that look like wedding dresses. There is nothing wrong with it. Now a days it is more modern to have a colored wedding dress. So a white prom dress wouldn't be that off. Who is really going to know that it is a prom dress right...it is a dress, it is white.... it will work!  Good luck in your search!

On another note, I felt the same way you did about wearing it once, but after I got into the wedding planning and talking to other brides I was on the fence, after my first shopping expierence I was sold on a wedding dress. There are many places that rent out dress for way cheaper than buying a prom dress, if you wanna go the wedding gown route and not have to worry about spending a ton, or trying to figure out what to do with it once you are wed! Good luck. Keep us updated!

  • you can wear whatever you want. if you want an alternative check out bridesmaid dresses too. often they come in white or ivory and some of them look almost the same as simple wedding dresses!
  • I don't think there is anything wrong with that at all.  As long as you find something that you feel beautiful in, that's the most important. Best of luck!
  • I agree- the main thing is to find a dress you love. As PP said- also look into a white/ivory Bridesmaid dress.
  • i looked at this option there are a lot of fancy prom dresses that would make great wedding gowns !
  • I think it would be fine as long as you love the dress - its your wedding of course you will look like a bride!
  • Definitely look into a white/ivory bridesmaid dress, or check nordstom.com - they have some gorgeous, simple white dresses that would be perfect for a non-fussy bride who doesn't want to spend a lot.

I'm wearing an ivory bridesmaid dress from Watters, by the way.. I bought a sample dress, and ended up only paying $200 for it :)
we got it right the second time around! ten.twenty.twenty-ten. Anniversary
  • I went to a prom dress shop a long time ago and my prom dress looked like a wedding dress and was less than 200 bucks. Looking back, I wish I didn't get a dress that looked like I was a deranged wannabe bride, but yeah, it was lovely.

So my advice, go for it!!!

  • One of my friends wore her debutante dress as a wedding gown.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
