Fathers tux color?

My mom and I are having a disagreement about the color of vest and ties. My groom is wearing ivory as that's the color of my dress. The groomsmen are in eggplant. The woman at the tux store said most fathers do black or silver ties and vests so I chose a dark charcoal silver kind of one. My mom wants the fathers to wear purple. I said I'd take it to the message board and let you guys decide. So...What did you do?

Ours fathers wore gray/silver, can't remember the actual color.  I think that's the "traditional" color for fathers.  You're fine with the dark charcoal/silver.

Also, your groom should be in a white shirt!  Don't fall for it when the tux shop tries to say he needs ivory to match your dress.  An ivory dress looks better than white on most brides and most people probably won't even know it's an ivory dress.  But an ivory shirt on your groom will be noticeable and look dingy.
  • The fathers only need to match in level of formality, not in wedding colors.  You can go either way, but personally I prefer a neutral color on the dads.

  • it doesn't make any difference at all. Personally, I wouldn't have the dads match the wedding party, unless the dad was IN the wedding party.  Honestly, unless the wedding is black tie, dad could wear a nice black suit, and skip the tux all together.
  • dad should wear black or silver..not purple

Like others said, they should stand out from wedding party
  • My husband, our groomsmen, and FIL and my dad all wore the same tux, but DH wore an ivory tie and vest, groomsmen wore blue, my dad wore a turquoise color and my FIL wore gold. The tailor had the dads' colors compliment the color of our moms' dresses. Everyone looked very nice.

  • Thanks for all of the responses, ladies...and holy crap my autocorrect failed me on my phone when I posted that!  I did tell my mom she can go with me to discuss when we get my stepdad fitted since the color can be changed up until two weeks prior...

Instead of discussing the color with your Mom, why don't you ask your Dad and Stepdad what they want to wear.  Since, you know, they are the one's that will have to wear the tux.

  • At our wedding the groomsmen & husband wore brown tuxes to go with color of wedding and the dad's wore black tuxes w/black vests & ties so that they would stand out as the dad's. My logic is that the mom's didn't wear brown dresses like the girls, why should the dad's have to wear the same color as the men.

  • Let your father decide.

However I do not feel he should match the groomsmen.
