Detachable wedding dress

Hey everyone!

My FI and I want to do a "big number" for our first dance, and we decided it would be better if I wore a shorter skirt so guests would be able to see both of our feet. I want to wear the big flowy gown for the ceremony, and recently discovered that there are dresses out there that have a detachable skirt to reveal a cocktail length dress underneath! Trouble is, I can't seem to figure out who sells them!! If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great! I have "googled" away, but I only find those terrible sites that sell chinese dresses =/

I appreciate your help!!!

Re: Detachable wedding dress

  • A friend of mine bought hers at Davids Bridal.  It was a fit and flare style.  She was having a Vegas wedding so she just ditched the "flare" and just had the fitted part which ended just above her knee.
  • I've heard that David Bridal do as well. Other than that, maybe a dressmaker can do something for you with your bigger dress, as in make the skirt part detachable or something?
  • Alfred Angelo has at least one that I know of -  style 2219 has a detachable skirt

  • Since there aren't a ton out there, I feel like you would be sacrificing finding a dress that you really love just for the sake of it being detachable. In your case, I would maybe recommend a second reception dress. I'm usually not a fan of those, but your selection will be SO limited with the detachable dress. You could end up buying a dress you were just 'in like' with just because it's detachable.

    Just my $.02.
  • I have a friend of mine that went to Brenda at Amazing Alterations, and she took her dress that she had and made it so the skirt was removeable, and no one could tell!  We were so surprised, when she came out and the bottom part of her skirt was gone for the dance!  I am totally going to Amazing Alterations when my dress comes in!  I would check her out, she is in Anoka.
  • I think Ann Taylor does. Cool idea of doing it this way because then you can do your dance but still wear your special dress all day & night.
  • What about you find the dress that you are in love with and then purchase an inexpensive short white dress that you change into just for your dance number.  Once the dance number is over with, go put your wedding dress back on.

Like Cwaggoner said, you shouldn't sacrifice what you want and love in a dress just because is doesn't have a detachable skirt.

  • Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

I do have my heart set on wearing the same "dress" the whole night, but I do see your point that I will have limited choices, and they may not have something I fall in love with. I'll keep looking in the mean time!

    Thanks again!!!
  • Mine was a detachable dress from Davids Bridal. . . . the skirt zipped off making the dress a mini. . . . I fell in love with it when I tried it on and had to have it.  I loved it!!!!
