What do you think of "trash the gown"?

Have you heard of "trash the dress" photo shoots? From what I gather- they take place after the wedding and the bride wears her gown...and allows it to be trashed for the sake of photos. This could involve chocolate, mud ... even spray paint.
I personally cringe at the thought and wonder WHY??????????? After searching for and dreaming of "the gown" why would you then trash it. And (from what I've seen) it seems to be only the higher end brides with the more expensive weddings and gowns that revel in this trend. Not being negative on those with bigger budgets- I mean if you have it and want to spend it, go for it(!) but it just seems to be "trendy". Perhaps someone out there can shed light on this and provide more insight....

if you need visuals or a bit more info......

• I think it's so wasteful. I would prefer to give it to someone or sell it (since I will need the $$).
• Completely AGREE!!! One of my photographer friends asked me if I would be willing to do a trash the dress shoot for his website after i got married. I almost CRIED! While the photos are definitely artsy and almost runway in nature, I do not feel like it is for me at all. However! I think every bride should go out for a "dress spotlight" shoot after the wedding...and get some shots without any actual trashing. IE...standing in your gorgeous gown in front of a wall of graffiti. Its an interesting contradiction, and you still get the awesome photos without the heartbreak. Plus...who doesn't wanna wear their dress again?

• My daughter accidentally ended up with two of the same dress* (long story involving MOB-me- paranoia) and when this was brought up, she was adamant that NEITHER dress would end up 'trashed'...she doesn't feel any particular need to keep either of them, but it just seems wasteful to ruin them for the sake of ruining them.

*note: the dresses were less than $300.00 each

In front of a wall of grafiti- yes!!!! love that sort of photo=) It's artistic enough without "trashing" the gown!

I wonder how the designers feel about this trend...especially since it's the higher end gowns that get trashed lol.

• My photographer asked if I had heard of it, and I cringed, too, when he explained it. It's just wasteful. And ruining something that's perfectly good really doesn't make for a beautiful picture in my head. The graffiti wall idea - THAT is something I'd consider!

• A lot of TTD sessions I've seen lately have been like what a PP described- no actual 'trashing' of the dress, but going out and taking the pics in random places. One of the Etiquette regs did it at an abandoned carnival place, and it looked really cool.

I don't think I could actually trash my dress, though. It was expensive, and I'm not sure whether I want to keep it or sell it.

• My photographer is more of an "artsy" type photographer, and I'm planning on asking her if she's willing to do a TTD session with me afterwards. Although I wouldn't get my dress wet or muddy or anything like that, I'd just rather do some artsy poses without having to worry about ruining it before the wedding or reception.

• I can't believe people really trash their wedding gown!

Atleast keep it, and make a pillow or something

I think it's cool as long as the dress doesn't actually end up trashed... like pps said it seems that many "trash the dress" sessions don't actually trash it.

However, I cannot imagine what on earth one does with artsy photos of oneself in a wedding gown in front of a graffiti wall, or on a train track, or laying in the grass or whatever. Just not my thing, I guess. :)

I'm either going to sell my gown or donate it to Brides Against Breast Cancer... my husband's mom died from breast cancer before we started dating so I kind of think that would be a nice way to honor his mom... plus they resell the dresses so it would be the best of both worlds.
• I have heard it in some places called "rock the dress" so instead of getting all dirty go to places in downtown and maybe not have your hair done perfect. More natural stuff...I think its cool as long as my dress doesnt get damaged.
• I think that a lot of the pictures that people get out of TTD sessions are absolutely beautiful and stunning.

Was it for me? No.

Would I judge anyone for doing it, if they could afford it? No.

A lot of things wedding-related are wasteful. Heck, spending hundreds of $$ on the dress in the first place is pretty wasteful.

• I don't get it, it just seems AWish. "But weddings are AWish in general!!!!1" Yeah but really ... how many pictures of yourself in your dress do you really need, given that there will probably be hundreds of pictures of you in your dress from the actual wedding day?

• I think it's wasteful too, I just can't see spending that much time and $$ looking for the perfect dress to just turn around and ruin it. I don't know if I'll keep mine or sell it yet, but I will definitely not trash it.

I think some brides get really nice pics from their TTD sessions, but I could never ever do it to my dress.
• I actually love the idea of a TTD photo shoot. I don't see the point of keeping my dress in a sealed box in my attic until forever, and I figure that I've already spent the money, I'm not going to get it all back... so why not have some fun with my dress? I'm a budget bride (with a $750 dress) and while I know I could sell it for some extra $, I think the fun memories I would get from the shoot would outweigh the bit of extra cash in my book.... but to each their own!
• it's huge over here in europe actually - but most girls will save their real wedding dress and buy a cheaper dress (think $99 dress from david's bridal type) for the TTD session

Okay- that sounds interesting and something I might even consider.

• I just saw some pictures from a ttd. My Friend recommended me to the photographer she is using, Andriano Batti www.adrianobatti.com . I saw a slide show on his web site it looked like so much fun!
I want to do it too!
I will probably buy a cheap gown instead of ruining my own gown.

I totally agree! Buying a ridiculously expensive dress to be worn for ONE day is wasteful. And so is storing it in a box in your closet for all of eternity. If you're planning on selling it I can see why you would not want to risk getting it dirty for some cool shots.

I love the idea and am definitely considering it.
• Maybe if you hate your dress? No sane person would do this.
