Making a wedding dress

I have been dress shopping and their is nothing that I have loved yet. I am very insecure of my looks, and it does not help that my left arm has horrible scars from an accident a few years ago. I was pushing the idea around of my grandma making my dress, and she has offered, but my mom thinks it is a bad idea. I want something were my arms are covered, a 3/4 length, and a nice train with a pleated skirt front.

My mom's thought was what if the dress was done and it did not look good on me. I really want my arms covered; I don't like my arms and I want them covered for the wedding. I know I should be thankful that I have my arm, but my scars are pretty bad. In all honesty, my fiance could have anyone in this world, and he picked me. I just want to look my best and feel my best on our wedding day.

I'm not sure if I should just add a jacket to it, or have my grandma make me one. The wedding is this fall in October and so the weather should not be to warm.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Making a wedding dress

  • My fiance was in a horrible motorcycle accident five years ago so I totally get where you're coming from.

What about altering a stress to add sleeves that make you happy?  Adding sleeves would be MUCH easier than making a whole dress.  The main dress part is the part of the dress I'd be worried about it fitting, not the sleeves.
  • Well the only option is David's bridal in my area. Are the sleeves nice? I have looked at them online and I was not to hot about them. I have bigger arms (I can't work out like I use too) so I don't want my arms looking like polish sausages.

It's funny in high school people would say horrible things about my arm, I went to a school where only 40 were in my class, and then I'm the one marrying a fire fighter that can get any girl he wants. I"m a size fourteen, so I am also insecure about that. I have always been bigger and my fiance even did some research and found a bunch of models that were my size to make me feel better.

You make yourself out to be some huge woman but size 14 is NOT!!!<div>
</div><div>You could add this jacket from DB to any dress...would this provide enough coverage for you?</div><div>
    </div><div><a href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Long-Sleeve-Lace-Jacket-LSLACE?cm_mmc=GMCPLA-_-%20Gloves%2C%20Wraps%20%26%20Sashes-_-Long%20Sleeve%20Lace%20Jacket%20Style%20LSLACE%2C%20White%2C%201X-_-6227395&mr:referralID=558ab2a6-6e5a-11e2-8751-001b2166c2c0" rel="nofollow">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Long-Sleeve-Lace-Jacket-LSLACE?cm_mmc=GMCPLA-_-%20Gloves%2C%20Wraps%20%26%20Sashes-_-Long%20Sleeve%20Lace%20Jacket%20Style%20LSLACE%2C%20White%2C%201X-_-6227395&mr:referralID=558ab2a6-6e5a-11e2-8751-001b2166c2c0</a></div><div>
</div><div>These can be added to any strapless gown:</div><div><a href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Long-sleeve-with-beaded-floral-motif.-LS1_Bridal-Gowns-Personalize-Your-Look-Sleeves-Coverage-Options" rel="nofollow">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Long-sleeve-with-beaded-floral-motif.-LS1_Bridal-Gowns-Personalize-Your-Look-Sleeves-Coverage-Options</a></div><div>
    </div><div>Or another jacket?</div><div><a href="http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_3-4-Sleeve-Satin-Jacket-3-4SLVSTN_Bridal-Gowns-Personalize-Your-Look-Sleeves-Coverage-Options" rel="nofollow">http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_3-4-Sleeve-Satin-Jacket-3-4SLVSTN_Bridal-Gowns-Personalize-Your-Look-Sleeves-Coverage-Options</a></div><div>
</div><div>I wouldn't make a dress.  I would look at some of the above options first.  The ladies at DB also may have suggestions for you as well!  Explain to them your concerns and I'm sure they'll be helpful.</div>

I know alot of stores will take regular strapless dresses and add extra fabric to cover arms so please don't think you can't get a dress with sleeves at a normal store even if you don't necessarily see them in wedding pics.

When you go dress shopping, ask about options. Many shops will change necklines, add sleeves, etc through alterations.

btw, Kate Middleton made sleeves popular so you see it a little more often lately...and stores definitely carry knockoffs of that dress for sure.

    Don't give up hope.

Stores also sell wedding shrugs, as well. ...not sure what part of your arm needs to be covered...

    Good Luck
  • You know, an alternative would be to talk with your grandmother about wether she could alter an existing dress to include exactly the sleeves you want.

That way you don't put as much pressure and time inconvenience on her, but still get exactly what you want, and include her.
