too soon to look for a dress?

Hello there! I got engaged back in February but because I still have a year left of college, we will not be getting married until August 2011. Of course, being a girly bride, one of the first things I want to do is go look for wedding gowns Tongue out However, I'm a little weary of trying on dresses this far in advance-a lot of things can change between now and then-my weight could go up or down, my style could change, etc. So I'm wondering-for those of you that have tried on gowns, how soon is too soon? Would it be ridiculous to go try on dresses sometime this summer? Of course I probably wouldn't buy a dress this soon, so I guess there's no harm in just seeing what's out there...

Re: too soon to look for a dress?

  • I bought my dress VERY early -- fourteen months out.  While I got a beautiful dress at a fantastic price (under $500), it gave me a lot of time for second-guessing.  I don't think there's ever any harm in trying on/looking/cutting out magazine pictures you like.  But if you're the type of person who is going to stalk people's bios and think "Gosh, she looks so pretty in that dress.  Maybe I should have waited to buy..." then I would wait until about nine months out to do any actual buying.

However.  If you DO find your dream dress, at a good price, and you're not the type to second-guess yourself, don't wait to buy it.  Styles get discontinued rapidly, and you don't want to lose out.  Good luck!

  • I can actually tell you- time goes by SOOO quick. I got engaged in August 2009. We didn't do a wedding for this August because my FI is going part time to get his MBA, so we wanted him to be done with that before we got married, so we set for March 5th, 2011 since he is graduating in Dec. I really wish I started looking for dresses earlier. I started about a month ago.

I'm one of those who needs to try on all different types of dresses and really needs a LOT of time to think about this decision and the time is ticking since I really need to order my dress by the end of next month. I wish I started sooner to allow myself more time to make this big decision! I'd say if you started to look this summer you'd probably be fine. Once piece of advice I keep hearing though is if you do buy early- stop looking after that! I've heard of so many girls buying one, then finding another- buying that, then trying to sell the other one. So I guess in a way it's almost good to wait until the last minute haha.

  • I think its fine to start shopping. I ordered my dress already and its going to take 6 months to come in. I wanted to get a start on shopping and ended up falling in love with my dress early on in the shopping process. I think as long as you're night they type to second guess things, then go for it. Also, once you decide on a dress STOP LOOKING! It will drive you crazy if you keep looking for something better and you may end up wanting to buy a second dress.

  • i'm getting married august 2011 too and have started shopping. i wasn't planning on shopping until september so it's a year out but i got too excited. i say it's not too early to do research and try on dresses but i wouldn't buy anything yet. i find trying on dresses gives me time to think about things and change my mind. i will probably decide though in a month or two. though the risk of trying on dresses now and not buying right away is that the dress may be discontinued if you decide to buy it a few months from now.
  • I started looking about 13 months from my wedding, and ordered around a year away. I didn't plan to buy so early, but I had been engaged for almost 6 months and I wanted to go dress shopping while i had some family in town. I ended up buying the first dress at the very first store I went to! I am very picky, however, so I know I made the right decision and haven't had any worries yet! I have my first fitting in late September and the wedding is in May. I'm glad I gave myself so much time because I'm having quite a big of alterations done to the dress.
