Wedding dress and weight loss

Hi guys,
So I seem to be in a pickle. I'm getting married in June of this year and I'm in the process of loosing 80 pounds, I've been eating right and exercising since October, so far I've lost 30 pounds and I have another 50 to go. I'm expecting to be a size 4-6 by my wedding and have found the dress I love. It's only available online and I only have 14 days to send it back if I dont like it. I've had my eye on it for some time and I keep checking if the price went down and I noticed today the size 4's are all sold out. I'm so torn with what to do. Do I buy the size 6 and hope it will look good (it wont fit me right now, i'm a size 10) or do I keep waiting until I've lost more weight and risk the size 6's selling out? The dress is $1000 so its a big commitment. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Congratulations on your weight loss!

I would be more worried that after spending $1,000 I wouldn't lose all the weight or that it still wouldn't fit me. How could you be sure you'd be a size 4 or a size 6 even if you did lose the weight? In high school I was 165 lbs and a size 16. I gained some weight, and then got back down to 165lbs and was a size 12. You might lose your weight differently, and also remember that you will usually lose weight more rapidly at first, you could hit a weight loss plateau. If I were you, I would either wait until I had lost the weight, or MAYBE buy the size 8. That way, if you lose the weight, and get down to a 6 (or possibly a 4) you can have it taken in. If you don't you can have it taken out, and if you only lose a little, it might be just right. Good luck! :)

  • Don't buy a dress hoping you will fit into it in 6 months. When people lose weight, especially the amount you hope to lose, they lose it quickly at first, and then hit a plateau. It can be very difficult to get past. Further, you don't knoe in what areas you will lose it most it doesn't always come off evenly, so what might fit your shape now, may not flatter you the same. With the possibility of it not looking right, or not fitting at all, unless you have thr budget to potentially throw a grand out the window, I'd recommend finding a place where you'll be able to buy off the rack. Also have a seamstress lined up who can fit it in time for your wedding. Good luck!

I agree with the posters above.  When I bought my gown I was 30 lbs heavier than I am now.  I knew at the time I bought the gown that I intended to lose weight.  My thought was that if I didn't lose the weight then I had a gown that would fit and if I did lose weight then I would just have to get more alterations than planned.

Do not buy your gown at the size you hope to be.  Buy the gown at the size you need right now.  Otherwise you risk losing money and having to scramble around to find a replacement gown at the last moment.

  • Yep, I agree with PP.

I bought my dress already - based on the biggest part of my body, my chest. The rest of the dress is going to be taken in at least 2 sizes, likely more since I'm losing weight also, and I'm prepared to spend a few hundred dollars on my alterations.

    Congrats on your weight loss!

  • Wedding dresses already run small, so I would recommend buying the size that fits you now based on your measurements and then have it taken in when you lose more weight as you get closer to your wedding.

Also, make sure you are getting your dress from a reputable online site and not a knock off site. Or you might end up dress-less! Best of luck to you!

  • I would wait. I've lost 100 pounds over about 2 years and I have about 10 more pounds to go and I can tell you that the last few pounds ("vanity pounds") are the hardest to lose and the weight comes off much more slowly. So it's hard to predict whether you'll have lost the weight by then. I'm in a similar situation because I bought a dress that is a little too small (doesn't zip the last 3-5 inches) but I believe I'll have lost the rest of the weight by then. On the other hand, my dress was $20 in a thrift store so it's also a completely different situation in that if it turns out I can't wear it, I'm only out $20. Best of luck to you! If you want, try LoseIt.com (website and free iPhone app). That's what I use to lose weight. I'm Masha Esther Melnik if you want to find me for support :)
  • By the way maybe you could buy it in a size 8 (since it's in between where you are and where you hope to be) and get it altered to make it smaller if/when you are successful in your weight loss.
  • I want to be the most beautiful brides.

  • Congratulations on your weight loss! I got enaged a few days ago, and started searching for the pefect wedding dress. I don't wanna spend a great fortune on a dress that I will only wear once!In your case, I personally won't risk losing money and buy the wedding dress in the size I hope to be.
  • I'm sort of in the same spot-- working on losing baby weight and getting married in July.  I ordered my dress in August, and the seamstress at the shop where I purchased my dress told me to order in my current size.  She said she'd be able to alter it to fit me and maintain the same look even if I lost as much as 50 pounds.  I was between two sizes, so I ordered the smaller of the two.  I think your best bet is to seek out a seamstress in your area, show her a picture of the dress and have a discussion with her about the difficulty of altering the dress to fit your body as you lose the weight.  That way, you don't have to worry about what happens if you don't lose as much as you're anticipating.  Good luck!
